NSA takes delivery of its first Cray Computer

Cray

The Cray-1 was a supercomputer developed by Cray Research. A Cray supercomputer was installed at NSA in 1976 - and then at GCHQ in 1977. However, official accounts make no mention of the sigint connection and assert that the first Cray-1 system was installed at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1976. These machines, invented by Seymour Cray, became one of the best known and most successful supercomputers in history.  They ran so fast that they required special coolling and in the autumn of 1976 engineering works were carried out at GCHQ in Cheltenham to provide the necessary chilled water.
