Brian Patchett defects from the British sigint station at Gatow in West Berlin

Patchett.1

Brian Patchett was a sigint operator at RAF Gatow in West Berlin. Unhappy in his work, and after several unsuccessful requests for a transfer, he decided to absent himself and found it easier to run east than to run west. His defection led to review of selection and deployment practices for forward sigint operators, but the end of National Service meant a severe shortage of personnel and there were, in practice, few changes made.
