Misato Matsuoka

Profile

Misato Matsuoka is an Early Career Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) at the University of Warwick since October 2014. On 29 Sept 2014, she submitted the PhD thesis entitled "Moving Beyond (Traditional) Alliance Theory?: a Neo-Gramscian Approach to the U.S.-Japan Alliance" supervised by Professor Christopher W. Hughes and Dr Dominic Kelly. Her thesis examines the US hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region by exploring the roles of the U.S.-Japan alliance through the neo-Gramscian lenses (i.e., common sense, organic intellectuals).

Prior to her doctoral studies at Warwick, she completed an MA in Global Studies and a BA at the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University (Japan). During the undergraduate years, she studied at the Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of California, Berkeley for one year as an exchange student while interned as a research assistant at the Northeast Asia Team, Department of Political Affairs (DPA) at the United Nations (UN) during the postgraduate years.

Research Interests

In addition to her PhD thesis, she is currently involved in the project entitled "Informal Political Actors in East Asia, Russia and the Arab World" by examining the roles of academics in Japan in the context of the U.S.-Japan alliance and other research activities which cover the following topics:

・ Security studies

・ Japanese foreign policymaking

・ US foreign policymaking

・ Regional security in the Asia-Pacific region (i.e., Japan-Taiwan relations)

・ Domestic politics in Japan
