DINNER WITH A SPY: AN EVENING WITH TONY MENDEZ, THE REAL-LIFE ARGO

tony-mendez

FRIDAY, 16 MAY 2014
7:00PM – 10:30PM
TICKETS: £129

On 4 November 1979, the American embassy in Tehran, Iran, was seized by anti-American protestors and 52 embassy workers were held hostage. In the midst of the chaos, 6 American diplomats secretly managed to escape and were given sanctuary by the Canadian ambassador. The daring rescue operation of these 6 individuals was led by CIA agent Tony Mendez. He devised an operation to spirit the diplomats out of the country on a scheduled flight from Tehran's airport, masquerading them as a Canadian film crew working on a fake science-fiction movie. On Sunday 27 January 1980, Mendez and the Americans successfully fled the country.

Mendez was awarded the Intelligence Star for his 'extraordinary heroism'. In 1997, in honour of the CIA's fiftieth anniversary, he was chosen as one of only 50 officers to receive the 'Trailblazer' Medallion. In 2012, the Argo operation was made into a film directed and starring Ben Affleck. It won 2 Golden Globes and 3 Academy Awards, including the 2013 Oscar for Best Picture.

You are cordially invited to spend an evening with Tony Mendez and learn about the Argo operation first-hand. Tony will also discuss his extraordinary career as the CIA's 'Chief of Disguise'. He will be joined by his wife, Jonna, a retired CIA officer with 27 years' experience of working undercover overseas.

You will be one of only 15 guests for a 3 course fine dining experience, with wine, in a private dining space at Scarman House, Warwick University. Special dietary requirements will be catered for by prior request.
