The Compagnia di San Paolo

Founded in Torino, Italy, as a charitable brotherhood in the 16th century, the Compagnia di San Paolo today is a private foundation that focuses its activities on the sectors of scientific, economic and juridical research, education, health, art, culture, and welfare. The Compagnia operates both by giving grants to organisations for projects in line with its multi-annual and annual guidelines, and by means of its own "permanent organisations" which work directly in various sectors of the foundations activities.

University L’Orientale in Naples

The “Orientale” University of Naples is the oldest school of Sinology and Oriental Studies in Europe and has a strong tradition of language, cultural and social studies, both ancient and modern, relating to Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Since its very beginning, (in 1732) the “Orientale” has set itself up as a center for learning and research which aims to focus on similarities and differences between various cultures.

The name "Orientale" is a clue to the origins of the institution. In the mid-17th century, the Manchus took over China and started a remarkable period of openness towards the west. This included welcoming Christian missionaries, such as Matteo Ripa, from the kingdom of Naples, who worked as a painter and copper-engraver at the Manchu court of the emperor Kangxi between 1711 and 1723. He returned to Naples from China with four young Chinese Christians, all teachers of their native language; they formed the core of what would become the "Chinese Institute" of Naples, sanctioned by Pope Clement XII in 1732 to teach Chinese to missionaries and thus advance the propagation of Christianity in China.

After the unification of Italy in 1861, the institution was transformed into the "Royal Asian College" and other languages such as Russian, Hindustani, and Persian were added to the curriculum. The institution then became a secular school for the study of eastern languages in general, African languages and all modern European languages. Today more than 50 languages are taught.

The University today has a very original outlook, offering students intellectual experiences and academic input which fundamentally enable them to get to know people and cultures which are different from their own, and to interact and communicate with them. The education provided also translates into effective entry into a rapidly-evolving job market: a window on the world, therefore, where language and culture and knowledge overlap and interweave, and eventually blend in the dual disciplines of teaching and research.

The University of Warwick

German Marshall Fund

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) strengthens transatlantic cooperation on regional, national, and global challenges and opportunities in the spirit of the Marshall Plan.

GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working in the transatlantic sphere, by convening leaders and members of the policy and business communities, by contributing research and analysis on transatlantic topics, and by providing exchange opportunities to foster renewed commitment to the transatlantic relationship.

In addition, GMF supports a number of initiatives to strengthen democracies. Founded in 1972 as a non-partisan, non-profit organization through a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance, GMF maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to its headquarters in Washington, DC, GMF has offices in Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Belgrade, Ankara, Bucharest, Warsaw, and Tunis. GMF also has smaller representations in Bratislava, Turin, and Stockholm.

Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies

Founded in 1993, the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is an independent regional non-governmental organization which aims to promote respect for the principles of human rights and democracy in the Arab region. For this purpose, CIHRS focuses on analyzing the difficulties facing the application of international human rights law, disseminating a culture of respect for human rights in the region, and engaging in dialogue between cultures regarding the various international human rights treaties and declarations. CIHRS further seeks to attain this objective by developing, proposing, and promoting changes to policy and practice in the Arab region in order to bring them in line with international human rights standards. In addition, CIHRS conducts human rights advocacy at national, regional, and international human rights mechanisms, carries out research, and provides human rights education, both for youth and for established human rights defenders seeking ongoing professional development. CIHRS is a major publisher of information related to human rights in the Arab region, and its publications include a magazine, an academic quarterly, and scores of books dealing with various human rights-related issues.

European Policy Centre

The European Policy Centre (EPC) is an independent, not-for-profit think tank, committed to making European integration work. The EPC works at the “cutting edge” of European and global policy making, providing its members, policy makers and the wider public with rapid, high-quality information and analysis on the EU and global policy agenda. It aims to promote a balanced dialogue between the different constituencies of its membership, spanning all aspects of economic and social life. In line with its multi-stakeholder approach, members of the EPC comprise companies, professional and business federations, trade unions, diplomatic missions, regional and local bodies, as well as NGOs representing a broad range of civil society interests, foundations, international and religious organisations. The EPC’s work is also strengthened and enriched by its collaboration with its two strategic partners, the King Baudouin Foundation and the Compagnia di San Paolo.

Stakeholder consultation has become a ‘buzzword’ in EU policy making, reflecting widespread recognition of the need to consult widely before formulating policies and introducing new EU legislation. In order to be effective, this requires open debate in a non-confrontational setting. It also means giving stakeholders opportunities to hear directly from top policy makers and to question them on their activities. This is precisely what the EPC achieves through its many public events, Task Forces and roundtable meetings. Detailed reports of all EPC public events are sent to our members and summarised on our website. The EPC also provides rapid, accurate and easily-accessible analysis – and recommendations for action where appropriate – through a wide range of publications, available on our website and in print.

The EPC’s work is organised under four flagship programmes addressing the key challenges facing the EU:

The Tunisian Observatory of the Democratic transition (OTTD)

The Tunisian Observatory of the Democratic transition (OTTD) is a legal non profit scientific research institutions. It is composed, mainly university professors. Those scholars have decided to contribute to the democratic transition with their knowledge and capacities.

Tasks
1- Observe, analyse and follow up on politics in the transitional period;
2- organising seminars on current issues and civic development workshops;
3- partner with civic education initiatives and raise awareness within Tunisia's civil society

Researches projects
1- Monitoring the transition (2012): as part of his mission, the Observatory has developed a collective research agenda at the intersection of tow central pillars: social activists and pertinent political topics. The observatory has set a research team of approximately thirty researchers to keep track of the democratic transition. They belong to various professional categories and social backgrounds. (Transition démocratique en Tunisie, 2 volumes, Diwan Editions, Tunis 2012).
2- Who's who of the Constituent National Assembly: a survey by interview was taken by ten researchers to determine the profile of members of the Constituent Assembly in 2013. The research will be publish in september 2014.
3- Democracy and territories in Tunisia: Analysis of electoral geography and sociology (2013): survey by interview was taken by six located Observatories in the electoral process.
4- Democratic transition in Tunisia since the ANC elections (2014): this tome cover 4 main fields: politics, economy, religion and culture. (La transition politique en Tunisie, deuxième phase (octobre 2011-2014), Diwan Editions, Tunis 2014).

Seminars and conferences
The observatory has organised a lot of seminars and conferences about topics linked to the democratic transition in Tunisia and arab world such as the electoral process, constitutional process, human rights, citizenship, fanatisme, Islamism, social networks.

Trainings:
1- 2011: Training for activists of political parties about the electoral process.
2- 2012: Strengthening of capacity of social actors (jeunes/18- 25 journalists belonging to the Tunisian media) for effective participation in the democratic transition process in Tunisia.
3- 2013: Training for youth about the political culture: the democratic transition.
