JUDITH BUTLER READING GROUP & POSTGRADUATE SEMINAR

 

Judith Butler will be holding a seminar (primarily for postgraduate students) from 11 – 1 on 24th May 2005. The seminar will take the form of a question and answer session on Butler’s Precarious Life: The Powers of Mourning and Violence (Verso, 2004). Judith Butler’s talk in the Arts Centre on ‘Torture & the Ethics of Photography’ (6.30 p.m.) will extend the analysis offered in that book, and consider possibilities for a non-violent ethics in the wake of the events of 11th September 2001.

 

Admission to the 11 a.m. seminar will be by invitation only (with numbers limited to 50). Privilege will be given to those who attend two prior Reading Group sessions on Precarious Life, scheduled for Wednesday 27th April from 1 – 3 & Wednesday 11th May 1 – 3. Tickets will also be issued for admittance to these two sessions. Every attempt will be made to include postgraduate students who are currently writing a thesis or an extended essay on some aspect of Judith Butler’s work. Postgraduate students affiliated to the Humanities Research Centre and to the Centre for Research in Philosophy and Literature will also be privileged. Staff may also apply to attend.

A sign-up sheet for the Butler Reading Group will be posted in the Graduate Space (in the 4th Floor extension of the Humanities Building) from midday on Monday 28 February 2005.

Tickets for the Butler Reading Group will be issued early next term or as soon as numbers allow.
