OLKC 2008 PhD Workshop 

A one day pre-conference PhD workshop will be held 27-28 April, 2008 under the theme of "How to get published" and will provide an opportunity for PhD students to interact with experienced scholars.

Programme:

 

The OLKC 2008 PhD Workshop is designed to provide participants with insights about getting published as well as creating an experience of the publication process.

 

 

 There are three general themes to the workshop:

 

 

 1. The Specifics of Getting Published

 

 

 This part of the workshop will include:

 

 

 

• Targeting a journal; knowing which journal to send a manuscript to and knowing why you want to publish in it (for example, the link to journal rankings); reading the journal/ citing from the journal; what do Editors look for?

   

• The process of preparing a manuscript and the importance of clarity of ideas and writing style. For example, how to move your manuscript beyond the descriptive; how to connect to conversations in the field and the journal; how to carefully and persuasively craft the one idea that is being discussed and progressed. We will also emphasise the importance of critique in building the conclusion, and the importance of clearly articulating a contribution to knowledge.

   

• The process of´Revise & Resubmit´: making sense of reviewers´ comments/ Editor´s comments and the key issues in rewriting a manuscript.

   

 

 

2. The Emotional Energy of Getting Published

 

 

 Given the theme of OLKC 2008 (´the many senses of organizational learning and knowledge´) the workshop tutors have designed an experiential learning event which will take participants through an editorial review process, from start to finish. Participants will experience a variety of roles and they will review and make selections 'for publication´. The event will offer direct experience of the review and selection process, it will allow participants to reflect on both the emotional as well as intellectual energy of getting published.

 

 

 For this part of the workshop, we have made the assumption that participants have either a paper they are presenting at OLKC 2008 or that they will bring an abstract (1,000 - 1,500 words) on a specific idea or theme from their doctoral studies. Workshop participants that have not had a paper accepted at OLKC can submit a paper or abstract with their application to the workshop. Applications for a place on the workshop should be sent to Russ Vince and copied to the Conference Administrator, Henrik Nitschke. The deadline for applications to the PhD Workshop is Friday 28^th March, 2008.

 

 

 3. Building an Academic Career

 

 

 The publication of academic papers does not occur in isolation from the emotions and politics of academic life. In the final part of the workshop, the tutors will be helping participants to understand publication in relation to their academic career. We will link ?getting published? to the broader notion of building an academic career, and consider how to build a body of work that can become career defining. This implies a strategic perspective on publishing.
