Conference background

Overview

Payment technologies, electronic fund transfers, and money exchange innovations are at the forefront of the FinTech revolution that drives digital transformation in the financial services sector worldwide. The increased digitalization of money and payments the last couple of decades means that the vast majority of money in circulation today exists as information, which flows through networks of hardware and software. This ‘transubstantiation’ of money into data has had major implications on the way we process economic transactions but also think about the different practices of value exchange. In response to these developments, this conference seeks to investigate how everyday media of economic exchange are being transformed in light of the recent innovations in digital networks, open platforms, mobile technologies and payment data analytics applications in both developed and developing economies.

More specifically, three overarching themes will be explored: Networks and Platforms (payment infrastructures, distributed networks, open platforms, sharing economies, etc.); Financial Data and Analytics (risk management, credit scoring, monitoring, information services, operational efficiency, etc.); and Software and Digital Innovation (mobile technology and wearable devices, digital wallets, smart-card technology, card emulators, near-field communication, biometric authentication, cryptography, distributed ledgers, etc.).

In order to facilitate the discussion, the following sessions have been put together:

- Digital innovation in the payments industry
- From cash, to plastic, to mobile payments: Discussing the evolution of monetary forms
- Technologies of exchange in a digital economy: When theory and research meet practice
- Financial inclusion and the role of mobile money
- Transactional data, analytics and algorithms
- 'Interrogating the Blockchain': Exploring the applications, issues and impact of distributed ledgers in payments

A detailed description of the above topics can be found here.

The Challenge

What happens if we bring academics and industry practitioners together and think about the important issues and challenges that businesses as well as economies face in todays’ digitized world? The inherent complexity of particular industries such as the financial services sector and the disruptive role of technology and digital innovation within that context, demand a more rigorous approach to research, that not only reaffirms or rejects our hypotheses but uncovers the underlying mechanisms that lead to the phenomena we observe, whilst translating knowledge from research into practice and policy. In that process, scholarly studies can often be slow in responding to the latest challenges while practice could use more independent thought and analytical expertise that can be found in academia. This conference tries to bridge that gap between academia and practice by bringing together university scholars along with fintech professionals in order to initiate a dialogue. Thus it is the aim of the conference to:

  • Make relevant academic research known to practitioners
  • Encourage academics to think closer to the needs of the market and try to solve real problems in order to make in impact
  • Give the opportunity to technology and finance professionals to articulate the challenges they face and think how academia can help them to address these
  • Consider ways to collaborate by sharing resources and allowing access to data
