The theory and practice of OR and strategy

We believe big data may well become a new type of corporate asset that will cut across business units and function much as a powerful brand does, representing a key basis for competition.

Are you ready for the era of ‘big data’?, McKinsey Quarterly, Oct 2011

The ORMS group works on theoretical foundations and methodological advances of Operational Research techniques to support management decisions. We promote the practical application of Operational Research in industry and government, with special emphasis on health, manufacturing and transport. Research in the group spans the whole field of Operational Research, from Mathematical Programming and Heuristics to Simulation and Strategy. A particular focus is on decision making under uncertainty. We have a collaborative research project with the Mathematics and Computer Science Departments called Discrete Mathematics and its Applications (DIMAP).

The group runs the specialist MSc programme MSc in Business Analytics
