Celebrating another successful summer at Laksh

We are delighted to report back on another successful summer of activity in collaboration with the Laksh Foundation where 12 Warwick students spent their summer.

Outstanding Student Contribution Award for Warwick Laksh Programme Volunteer

The University’s Outstanding Student Contribution Award (OSCA) aims to recognise exceptional student achievements and is a celebration of individuals whose efforts have made a real difference and a significant contribution to a community.

We are pleased to announce that OSCA has been awarded to Hasan Suida, a former volunteer and associate of the Warwick Laksh Programme. Hasan, who recently was awarded his degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, has undertaken two placements in India at the Laksh Foundation on behalf of the programme.

Thanks to your donations, our researchers have discovered that we can destroy cancer cells more effectively and selectively with a unique new reusable treatment, activated with a substance found in stinging nettles and ants.

Last year your donations let 316 Year 6 children visit Warwick

Warwick Arts Centre's popular 'Aspiration Days' give local schools a creative, fun field-trip, and a chance to see what life at University is like.

Last year, gifts like yours helped our specially trained Education team to work with schools which historically have a low proportion of students going on to higher education.

But thanks to you, we've offered a helping hand.

Every year at Warwick, donors support students in emergency need by donating to student hardship funds. Last year you helped 38 students who found themselves in financial crisis and hardship. You helped them stay at Warwick and complete their course of study, no matter what they were facing, with emergency loans or grants.

£2m to Maths, Statistics and Computer Science for their new building

Great news at Warwick, where the Wolfson Foundation have generously agreed to donate £2m towards our new Mathematical Sciences Building.

This future home to researchers and students will allow the departments to increase in size by 10%.

Kenilworth Mayor gives diabetes research in Warwickshire a boost

Councillor Michael Coker has chosen to make a donation of £2,500 to the University of Warwick’s Diabetes research groups from the Mayor’s charitable fundraising. The funds have been raised over the last year through numerous fundraising events and campaigns locally.

Over 750 biomarkers identified as potentials for early cancer screening test

Researchers have identified 788 biomarkers in blood that could be used to develop an early stage cancer screening test for the general population.

The team - from the Universities of Sheffield, Coventry and Warwick - started with over 19,000 scientific studies published over the last five years that investigated blood based biomarkers. Systematic review methods - including ruling out studies in fewer than 50 patients - reduced this to 4,000 studies from which the final biomarker list was compiled.

Warwick develops cloud-computing platform for UK's medical microbiology community

The University of Warwick has led the development of a cloud-based microbial bioinformatics resource, which is believed to be the largest of its kind in the world.

The Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (or CLIMB project) is a resource for the UK's medical microbiology community and international partners. It will support their research by providing free cloud-based computing, storage, and analysis tools.

Through Warwick in Africa you are helping young Africans to escape poverty thanks to improved Maths and English skills. Each summer Warwick volunteers travel to Ghana, Tanzania and South Africa and through their inspirational teaching deliver significant improvements in performance, ambition and motivation for learners and their teachers.

Warwick in Africa is expanding in Tanzania

We first started working in Tanzania in 2008 thanks to Warwick alumnus Jaymin Trivedi, Warwick graduate and Tanzanian national. This summer he has increased his support to enable us to do even more and have a longer lasting legacy.

We will be piloting two innovative new programmes and bringing that Warwick magic to classrooms across Africa thanks to donors like Jaymin and you.
