Education

Background and Problems Identification
  1. The gaps among the aims of education as stated in the official policy documents, the understanding of teachers about this aim and their abilities to translate it into practice can inhibit the effective delivery of learning.
  2. For students to experience well-rounded education, schools and the community should work in tandem to provide fruitful learning experiences within as well as outside the lockstep of the classroom. This is where parental involvement is essential as character building and learning motivation stem from family education. The current situation, however, does not indicate an adequate two-way interaction between the school and parents, as evident in teachers’ indifference and lack of commitment in holding regular parent-teacher consultation sessions. As a result, monitoring and feedback toward individual students learning gains and difficulties are disregarded. Considering constraints such as time and large class sizes, a straightforward and feasible parent-teacher meeting scheme is necessary to generate higher parental attention, interest and participation in students’ learning process.
  3. Indonesian government has been awarding thousands of scholarships to send students and academics abroad to pursue higher postgraduate study. While this program is positive for the country human resources development, the program has not been optimally benefitting the students themselves, neither optimally raising Indonesia’s international research profile.

Strategic Goals

The group is divided into three smaller working groups to discuss about three key issues that are interested to them and of which they have expert knowledge and skills. The three key issues cover the aspects of teacher’s understanding of the normative purpose of education, increasing home-school relationships and enhancing academic skills for Indonesia scholars. More specifically, the goals are stated below:

  • Helping educators to better implement the purpose of education in practice.
  • Improving the effectiveness of government scholarship funding, by raising the research quality and profile of the scholars, through training and creating network to match between potential students’ work and Indonesian scholars in the UK to benefit all stakeholders.
  • Creating a pedagogically sound, cost and time-efficient parent-teacher meeting scheme

Objectives
  1. Identifying the understanding of educators about the purpose of education.
  2. In time, we intend to see the general outcome of increased parental/guardian engagement in education particularly in state schools. The specific standards are:
    • Parents are regularly invited to speak with the home teacher regarding their children’s learning progress.
    • Parents are better informed of their children’s specific achievements and areas of improvement.
    • Parents are aware of how they can pre-empt and reduce learning difficulties, such as lack of motivation.
    • Students are encouraged and facilitated to pursue areas of interest in academics, arts, sports or public service both by the school and parents
  3. Improving research skills of Indonesian students in the UK.
  4. Improving international publication index of Indonesian researchers.
  5. Creating sustainable collaborations between students and Indonesian scholars in the UK.
