Alan Turing Institute up and running
The Alan Turing Institute has marked its first few days of operations with the announcement of its new director; the confirmation of £10 million of research funding from Lloyd’s Register Foundation; a research partnership with GCHQ; a collaboration with Cray Inc. and EPSRC; and its first research activities.
The Institute is a joint venture between the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, Warwick, UCL and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and will promote the development and use of advanced mathematics, computer science, algorithms and big data for human benefit.
Professor Sir Nigel Thrift said:
We are delighted to be one of the five university partners in the Alan Turing Institute. Warwick’s contribution draws on Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at Warwick all of which are strong highly ranked departments. The Turing Institute will be a powerful driver of international data science and we are thrilled to be playing a significant role in the new Institute.”
What's happening
The Institute has announced that it:
- Has appointed Professor Andrew Blake, who will join the Institute in October, as its first Director
- Has accepted a formally approved offer of £10 million of research funding from the board of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation
- Will work with GCHQ on open access and commercial data-analysis methods
- Is to collaborate with Cray Inc. and EPSRC to exploit a next generation analytics capability on the UK’s Largest Supercomputer for scientific research, ARCHER
Getting involved
Call for Expressions of Interest
The Institute will soon be seeking applications from outstanding postdoctoral researchers across the globe to join them. The Institute is seeking to attract researchers at early stages in their careers who have the potential to lead the development of the new field of data science. Prospective applicants are invited to submit a curriculum vitae and a one-page covering note explaining how their expertise is relevant to data science and the mission of the Institute via email to info at turing dot ac dot uk. Full details of the application procedure will be sent in the autumn to those who register their interest.
Research at the Institute to Commence in the Autumn of 2015
During the autumn a series of summits for users of big data will be held at the founding partner universities. These summits are aimed at encouraging users to discuss the challenges they are encountering in dealing with big data and identifying high impact research areas for the Institute.
