The NHS 111 service is now available in Warwickshire to make it easier for the public to access healthcare services when they need medical help fast, but it’s not a life-threatening situation.

If anyone needs to contact the NHS for urgent care, there are now only three numbers:

• 999 for life-threatening emergencies

• your GP practice

• 111 for non life-threatening emergencies

The NHS Direct service will cease to exist, as will the call-handling element of the GP out of hours services, although the GP out-of-hours services themselves will continue.

In Coventry and Warwickshire, local clinicians have been working to develop the national framework for the NHS 111 service to meet local needs. This has involved developing a local directory of services which covers hospital, primary care and community services and will soon cover third sector services as well.

Social care services will also be covered by the directory, allowing call handlers to signpost patients to the most appropriate service to meet their needs.
