Government declares Warwick teaching “excellent” - Tops year of teaching success for University

It was announced today, Thursday 22nd June 2017, that the University of Warwick has been awarded silver status in the Governments’ Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). The award defines Warwick as a university that achieves “..excellent outcomes for its students“ with “An institutional culture that facilitates, recognises and rewards excellent teaching”. It also notes that Warwick “..consistently exceeds rigorous national quality requirements for UK higher education.”

Warwick’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Stuart Croft said:

A Warwick education is much sought after and our students and staff are highly talented. This result is further confirmation of that fact but it is just the latest teaching success in a year filled with a range of significant achievements for Warwick which led us to be ranked 80th in the world the Times Higher World University Rankings 2016 and 57th in the QS World Rankings for 2017.

The TEF panel’s judgement noted in particular the following aspects of students experience at Warwick:

  • Student stretch within and beyond the curriculum which is exemplary for students

who engage with it

  • A curriculum focus on research informed teaching enabling students to engage

with, and be involved in, research and scholarship

  • High levels of engagement with employers and a high level of demand for Warwick graduates
  • A culture that recognises and supports the development of teaching excellence
  • High quality physical and digital resources underpinned by significant and sustained investment.

This latest accolade comes at the end of an academic year that has seen a succession of major teaching initiatives and achievements by the university including:

  • Over £20 million in new investment in teaching. At the end of March Warwick’ s new £18.5m million dedicated teaching building, the Oculus, was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. This academic year also saw Warwick commit to an additional £2 million in annual funding to support new teaching initiatives.
  • Warwick was ranked in the top ten the UK in the teaching focussed university league table published in the Guardian on Tuesday May 16th 2017. In fact for almost a quarter of a century Warwick has been in ranked in top ten of every UK newspaper overall university league table (the first such ranking was published by the Times in 1994).
  • The Guardian tables published in Tuesday May 16 2017 also ranked 16 of our individual Warwick’s individual academic departments in the top ten in the UK for their teaching. That result comes just two months after the QS World University Rankings by Subject placed 10 subjects at Warwick to be in the world’s top 50.
  • At the start of this academic term new research for the “Graduate Market” named Warwick as the university targeted by the largest number of the UK's top graduate employers. Graduate employment outcomes are one of the indicators used in the new TEF process.
