Structural Materials

Structural materials research focuses on production, processing and performance of a range of materials in a wide spectrum of sectors. At Warwick, our research in structural materials is driven by:

  • developing new lightweight materials alongside measuring and modelling their performance
  • improving manufacturing routes for efficiency and production of complex parts
  • gaining energy resilience in production and in use.

Topics include development of energy resilient production routes for iron and steel, processing of new nanocomposite materials that offer high specific strength, development of new hybrid materials that combine performance and weight savings.

The synergy between our research in light weighting and advanced propulsion systems for transport is highlighted by novel Li-ion battery research for lightweight electric vehicles. Our interest in structural materials for energy also includes development and performance of new metallic alloys and novel coatings for construction and automotive sectors and for high temperature turbines and turbochargers.
