Summary outcomes of internal reviews

The University believes it is important to make information available about the internal processes we use to assure the quality and standards of our courses. We usually review each department every five or six years. This table shows when the last review took place, and when the next one is scheduled for. We are gradually publishing summaries of the outcomes of these reviews.

We review everything a department does - teaching, research, management, administration, business links, overseas collaborations - through the Strategic Departmental Review process. We publish a summary of the teaching and learning elements of each reviews here. Until around 2006 we used two parallel processes: Periodic Review for teaching and learning, Quinquennial Review for research, administration and management.

Official statistics on higher education are available on the Unistats website. Between 1994 and 2001 the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) carried out subject reviews of individual departments and subjects in all universities across the country. The reports on these reviews are now somewhat out-of-date.

HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) carries out independent reviews of research quality in its Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The 2008 RAE results are the most recent; results from the next exercise (REF) will be published in 2015.
