Andrew Carter

Born 1964, London

Andrew Carter studied fine art at Central St Martin’s before completing a printmaking Masters degree at Camberwell College of Art where he graduated with distinction. He has exhibited widely including four times at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and his work is held by the V & A. In 2012 he won the Jealous Prize, a prize awarded annually to selected MA fine art graduates. The prize winners receive a residency at Jealous Print Studios in London, where, with the support of the studio team they produce a limited edition screenprint.

Starting his career as a painter of large works Andrew Carter scaled his work down when the demands of family life required him to work from home. Producing a series of limited edition books with poets, acted as a catalyst to his move from painting to printmaking. However he does consider his prints to be ideas that may one day become paintings. Inspired by American Minimalist Geometric painters such as Ellsworth Kelly and following in the strong, very British tradition of printmakers such as Eric Ravilious, Carter combines these two very different strands together.
