Norman Ackroyd

Born 1938, Leeds, England

Norman Ackroyd trained at Leeds College of Art from 1957-61 and then at the Royal College of Art in London from 1961-64 where he studued under Julian Trevelyan. He taught at Winchester College of Art and the Central School of Art in London. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1991 and was appointed Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Art in 2000. In 2007 Ackroyd was awarded the CBE for his services to engraving and printing.

Although best known for his etchings, Ackroyd's practice includes watercolour, large scale architectural commissions and murals. Among the latter are: British Airways, Birmingham International Airport - Eurohub, 1991; The Great Hall, British Embassy, Moscow, 2000; 'Galapagos' external mural for Sainsbury Laboratory, University of Cambridge, 2010.


His work is represented in major public collections in the UK including the Arts Council, the British Council, the British Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Scottish National Gallery and the Royal Collection; his work is also held in international collections including the Stedelijk Collection and Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; the Fogg Museum, the Museum of fine Arts, Boston; Harvard; the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the National Galleries of Canada, Norway and South Africa.
