This print follows on from a body of work created by Patterson called ‘Under Cartel’, a series of photographs of equestrian statues. When first exhibited at the Haunch of Venison Gallery in London, they were arranged in pairs on the walls with a suggestion that the location of each could be swapped for the other. For example Napoleon I in Cherbourg as depicted in this print could take the place of the Duke of Wellington on Hyde Park Corner. With these potential exchanges Patterson highlights the lack of relevance that many of these statues currently have to present day reality and national identity.

This work is part of a portfolio of 20 prints produced by Advanced Graphics London in 2012, produced to celebrate 30 years since their first print venture in 1982: The London Suite, prints by ten London-based artists. This second suite includes 20 London artists, including six of the original 1982 contributors and eight RAs, who were all asked to produce screenprints with size being the only constraint. Some works have the addition of woodblock and some have as many as 25 separate printings or layers within the image.
