Parking for events: FAQs

I paid for my permit – doesn’t that mean I should have a space?

We understand it can be very frustrating trying to find a parking space on campus at the moment. While your parking permit doesn’t guarantee you a parking space, the University is very conscious that permit holders need to be able to park and has put in to place some options to help you park during this major transformation of campus.

I always park in car park 7 – why are you causing me this inconvenience?

We understand that it must be frustrating to not be able to park in your usual space. The major transformation of campus that is currently underway is, unfortunately, bound to have this kind of impact in the short term. The University is very conscious that you need to be able to park and has put in to place some options to help you.

Why is the University prioritising external visitors over its own staff?

Major commercial events, departmental open days and other large events are a key part of University life, and we must support them during this major transformation of campus. However, the University is very conscious that you need to be able to park and has put in to place some options to help you.

Why is the University penalising students who have no option but to use pay and display car parks?

We’re trialling this reserved spaces scheme to support the University’s many and varied needs. Major commercial events, departmental open days and other large events are a key part of University life, and we must support them during this major transformation of campus. These events, by definition, attract people who can only park in pay and display car parks, hence our need to reserve the spaces in car park 7.

Our recommendation to all students at the moment, given the limited availability of car parking, is to take the bus to and from campus. We’ve been working with the local bus companies to make sure the services are as regular and reliable as possible at this time. For more information, see our page on bus services to and from campus.
