The Hardware

Here an overview of the current hardware used in our Commvault system.

hotisle

ITS Datacentres

We run backup servers in the Chemistry / ITS central campus data centre. There are no production servers in this location. Backup data is never stored in the same location as your servers storage.

Our data centres are:

  • Physically secure, access is controlled & recorded via staff ID cards.
  • Air conditioned
  • UPS Protected from powercuts & brownouts

cisco

Dedicated Network

We can perform backups over the standard campus network. If required, a dedicated backup VLAN is avalible in ITS data centres.

We have dedicated 40Gbit connectivity to the campus network.

SAN storage is connected by a multiple connections to a dedicated FC fabric. The network covers two datacenters, allowing us to efficiently write to tape in a seperate location.

DL380P

HP DL380p Servers

Our 'media agents' which receive the backup data are HP DL380p G8 servers.

  • Dual power supplies
  • Multiple 10Gbit Ethernet connections aggregated.
  • SSDs for system partitions with hot spare.
  • 4x 1TB SSD for index cache with spare.
  • Multiple intel PCIe NVMe or Fusion IO cards for dedupe databases.
  • Dual 8/16Gbit FC SAN connection to fabric.

e60

j90

Fast Disk Storage

We have six NexSan E60 SAN arrays to store deduped backup data.

  • 60 Disk array
    • 4x 14 disk (3TB SATA) arrays
    • RAID 6
    • 4 hot spares
  • Dual power supply.
  • Dual controller.
  • 4x 16Gbit FC SAN connection to fabric.

We also have two Supermicro Hyperscale storage arrays to store deduped backup data.

  • 90 Disk JBOD, with dedicated head node.
    • 6x 15 disk (8TB SAS3) arrays
    • RAID Z3 (RAID 7 equivilent)
    • Dual 12Gbit SAS interconnect
  • Quad power supplies
  • Dual controller
  • Dual 10Gbit Ethernet to the media agent servers.

i6000

Tape Libraries

We have a Quantum i6000 Library in two of our data centers.

  • Dual power supply
  • Multiple controllers
  • Dual 4/8Gb FC SAN connection to fabric.
2 CAB LTO4 Library
  • 4x FC drives
  • 740x LTO4 tapes
  • Single Robot

4 CAB LTO5 Library

  • 6 LTO5 drives
  • 1626 LTO5 tapes

Backup Retention

Backups are retained depending on the service you choose, however the retention concept remains the same.

Here is an example of the restore points, for a server on the 'Standard Backup' product.

› 14 Daily Backups
› 4 End-of-week backups
› 12 End-of-month backups
› 2 End-of-year backups

This example assumes today is the 2nd of April 2015. The Green highlighted days show the restore points avalible.

cal

As you go back in time, the restore points get further apart. To restore a file, it must have existed during one of the backup events. For example, If you created a file on 21 Dec 2014 and deleted it on the 24th Dec 2014, it would not be avalible to recover as only the monthly backup is kept that far back.

Cost Comparison (Feb 2015)
