Roles & Responsibilities

To ensure that we backup the right data, store backups in a separate location & maintain these for appropriate periods of time, we work closely with everyone involved. Here are the responsibilities of each stakeholder:

Information Asset Owner

Creates & 'owns' the data.
  • Identify the importance of their data and information to the university. Determine which data should be backed up.
  • Determines and ensures the frequency and retention of backups provide adequate protection for compliance with university, audit and legislative requirements. Where data is automatically protected as part of another service, and the default level of data protection is determined to be insufficient, IAOs must raise a service request for the storage team.

System Administrator

Administers where the data is stored.
  • Identify where supporting software & hardware is physically located.
  • Maintaining application & system software at a supported version.
  • Regularly validate backup jobs.
  • Restore, recover and test data from the backup system as required.

Backup Administrator

Backup service provider, usually the storage team, IDG.
  • Provide advice on IDG backup and storage services.
  • Plan, deploy and administer the backup system hardware and software.
  • Ensure backups are run to schedule and retention is met.
  • Verify all full backup jobs.
  • Maintain an audit trail of config, backup and restore tasks.
  • Provide reports on job success/failure. Raise event alerts for failures.
  • Perform file restore operations as required.
  • Provide onboarding support for new customers. Provide client backup agent software.
  • Including proof of concept and backup solution design.
  • Provide customer support for the backup service. Liaise with Commvault support.
  • Provide advice and support to customers writing a backup policy.
