How can I reduce the size of files I email?

Here are some hints and tips on how you can reduce the size of your files:

  • Working with images:
    • If possible, don't create bitmaps or tifs. Instead create gifs or jpgs.
    • Crop images, or reduce resolution and/or colour depth.
    • Insert images into your files, don't paste them.
  • Compress files:
    • Use the Windows 7 file compression facility, either:
      • In a Windows Explorer folder view, right-click in the white space, select New, and select Compressed (zipped) Folder. Drag your file (or files) into this folder, which will the be compressed. You can then send the folder to the recipient, as required. Or:
      • In some Windows 7 configurations, right-click the file, click Send to and select Compressed (zipped) folder. A Compressed (zipped) folder will be created in the same directory as the file.
    • Other tools such as WinZip could also be used to compress files. Use with caution.
