How to get started
You will require an enabled account to log in. You can obtain this either from an existing self-service group owner (if you are part of their team), or you can request access from the IT Services helpdesk (helpdesk at warwick dot ac dot uk | x73737).
To use the Servers on Demand self-service portal you will need to use one of the following browsers:
- Microsoft - IE8 or newer (Compatibility mode for IE8, IE9 and IE10 is not supported. Using compatibility mode can cause blank pages)
- Google - Chrome 29 or newer
- FireFox - Firefox 23 or newer
Go to https://cloud.warwick.ac.uk/
Enter your IT Services username and password, then press ‘Login’
Once you have logged in, the ‘Home’ tab will be displayed – this tab shows your open requests, active servers (VM’s), and your inbox.
To create a server press on the ‘Catalog’ tab, once there you will see pre-configured servers that are available to you, select the server you want by clicking on ‘Request’ in the bottom right-hand corner.
A new screen will appear asking you to configure the hardware elements of your server as well as its lease duration (how long you would like the server for). It’s worth noting that 3072MB = 3GB, 4096MB = 4GB, 5120MB = 5GB and 6144MB = 6GB. If you require more capacity on your data drives, select the storage tab and edit the capacity. Once you have finished editing the server settings, press ‘Submit’.
Your server will then begin to build automatically, you can check its progress in the ‘Requests’ tab.
Once the server is built, and ready for use you will receive an email stating the request was completed successfully. Inside the same email will be your server's specification, and IP address.
Connecting to the server
You can use any client that supports the RDP protocol, for example
- Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection - Available on all Windows operating Systems
- Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac - Available from the App Store
- Remmina Remote Desktop Client - Available for most popular Linux Distributions
Connecting to your Linux Server from a Mac or another Linux operating system is as simple as opening the default terminal application and establishing an ssh connection. For example:
- user@mypc:~$ ssh firstname.lastname@example.org
When connecting from Windows you can use PuTTY. It is available to download for free here.
