What can I put in the footer?

The footer has two parts:

  1. An optional custom footer tailored to the individual website
  2. A mandatory common footer displayed at the bottom of every page

Optional custom footer

The content is flexible. It typically contains information that needs to persist through your site but isn't important enough to be part of the navigation. For example, these could be contact details, staff intranet links and social media icons:

The footer is styled to match the site design. There should be clear demarcation between the footer content and the page content but it should not distract from the page content.

The footer should not be used as a replacement for primary navigation. The most important sections of a site should always be reflected in the navigation menu.

Mandatory common footer

This mandatory element is displayed at the bottom of every University web page by default. It contains the page contact, the date when the page was last edited, links to copyright and privacy statements, and the window device. The common footer content and layout cannot be changed. The background colour is flexible to tie in with your site design.
