How do I add next/previous links to my page?

When people browse around web pages, they often do it in an arbitrary fashion. You have no way of controlling the order in which people might read or absorb information. Sometimes, however, it can be useful to enable people to read your pages in a linear fashion as they would do in a book. For example, you might want students to read a few pages of information in order and then answer a short quiz or perhaps you might need to provide step by step instructions.

Next and previous links

SiteBuilder2 provides a feature that will automatically add 'next' and 'previous' links to a set of pages so that they are read in a particular order. Using this, in conjunction with not showing pages in the local navigation, means that the pages can only be viewed in a linear fashion. The pages are ordered according to their sort order and all pages are shown regardless of whether they are shown in the local navigation. You can choose whether the next and previous links appear at the top of the page, or the bottom of the page or both. You can also choose to show page numbers, for example 'page 2 of 8'. You need to set this feature in the page properties of the page above (parent page) the collection of pages that you want to be read in a linear way.

To use the feature:

  1. Browse to the parent page, click on the Edit link and chose Edit properties.
  • On the right column, click the down arrow icon to expand the Advanced properties box.

Next Previous Properties

  • Where it says 'Show next & previous links on sub-pages' use the drop down menu to select where you wish the links to appear on the page, either top or bottom or both, and whether you wish page numbers to appear.
  • Click on Save Changes and then click Done.

You should see that the next and previous links have appeared on the sub-pages.
