Word 2013

Getting started

Microsoft Word 2013 is a word-processing program designed to help you create professional documents. Word helps you organise and write your documents more efficiently. Word 2013 has an improved start-up screen. Your first step in creating a document in Word 2013 is to choose whether to start from a blank document or to use a template to do some of the work for you. From then on, the basic steps in creating and sharing documents are the same. If you open a recent document Word will pop up a 'Welcome back' bubble to the right of the screen and ask you if you would like to return to the point in the document you were at when you last used it

Edit PDF’s in Word.

In Office 2007 and Office 2010 it was possible to save a Word document as a PDF file, but until now you couldn't edit PDFs in Word without first converting them to Doc or DocX format. In Word 2013 you can open PDF files, edit them, and then save them as either DocX files or PDFs

The Design tab

Document formats have been extended by allowing you to choose Themes, Colours, and Fonts to use with them. If you come up with something you would like to use all the time you can use the new 'Set as Default' option

Improved collaboration

If you collaborate with others on Word documents, you know how quickly conversations can become difficult to follow, because the previous version of Words comments tool treats every utterance as a new comment. In Word 2013, you can reply to a comment within that comment by clicking the Comment Reply button. This captures the entire discussion of a given point inside a single comment box, which will appear as a small bubble in the documents margin

New table tools

The table tools in Word 2013 have been significantly improved. You can now add a new row to a table by hovering your mouse just outside the left edge of the table at the point at which the row is to be inserted. A small icon will appear; all you have to do is click on it. A new column can be added in a similar fashion. New Delete buttons on the Mini Toolbar make it easy to delete columns and rows; if the table itself is selected you can delete the entire table

Easier to work with large documents

Long documents can become difficult to manage, especially if you are just working on a small part of it. Word 2013 lets you collapse and expand a document, so you see only the portion you need. To do this, you must format the documents headings using the built-in styles Heading 1, Heading 2, and so on
