Emergency evacuations

When you enter the Library please make sure that you are aware of the nearest evacuation route from where you are working. Exits are signed with a green sign which shows a person running and may contain the words 'Fire Exit'. Look at Library Floor plans to find the locations of Fire Exits.

For emergency evacuation purposes the Main Building and Extension Building are treated as two separate areas. If you are in the Extension Building and the alarm sounds in the Main Building, you will not be able to access the Main Building. If you need to leave the Library, you will need to take one of the Fire Exits in the Extension Building. You will not be able to re-enter the Library until it is safe to do so. If you are in the Extension Building and the alarm sounds in the Main Building, you will need to exit via one of the Fire Exits in the Extension Building but will be able to re-enter the Main Building. The bridge connecting the two buildings will be closed until it is safe to re-enter the Extension.

In the event of an emergency evacuation, there will be a loud continuous siren. In the event of the alarm sounding, the lifts will be disabled. Please make your way to the nearest Fire Exit. The assembly point is in Library Square.

Example of a refuge point If you are unable to leave the building via the stairs, you should wait at the nearest designated Refuge Point (pictured here) in one of the stairwells.
Library Evacuation Wardens will check the refuges and inform you that they will seek assistance. The Emergency Services will be informed of anyone waiting at a Refuge Point. If you are waiting at a Refuge Point in the Library Extension, Security will find you as part of their safety checks.

Refuge points can be found on the Library Floor plans for each floor. They are represented by the letter R in a red circle.
