What is Impact?

Impact, based upon research excellence, is the identifiable and evidenced contribution made by universities to the economy and society, which can include the variety of ways in which research-derived knowledge and skills benefit individuals, organisations and society through:

  • Enhancing the economic competitiveness of the UK and its global economic performance
  • Improving and enhancing the delivery of public services and policy development
  • Improving quality of life, health and wellbeing and creativity.

Demonstrating Impact

Impact from research related activities are derived through many different mechanisms across the university including:

  • Publicly funded research
  • Collaborative or contract research
  • Consultancy
  • Staff exchanges
  • Licensing and spin out companies
  • Public, policy and cultural engagement
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Training and student enterprise.

Impact Strategy

Warwick aims to become an undisputed global leader in research. Embedded within this vision is a clear commitment towards impact, across all of our research disciplines.

Each faculty has experience of, and is drawing together, new strategies and infrastructure to support of research impact.

Warwick is committed to supporting and developing researchers, departments and faculties in realising this vision.

The Research Impact Strategic Delivery Plan provides a framework for achieving our ambitions for research impact.

The Impact and Innovation team offers the below services:

Management of a multi-million portfolio of institutional grants for research impact, including:

  • Impact Acceleration Accounts from EPSRC, ESRC, BBSRC and STFC
  • Wellcome Translational Partnership
  • HEIF-funded Warwick Impact Fund.

Strategic advice on developing pathways to impact, via external engagement locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.


Guidance on how to embed impact into funding bids.


Supporting academics with impact development and delivery.

Advice on policy engagement opportunities and support for the development of policy briefs.


Support to track and record evidence of research impact.


Support for the delivery of the impact element of the Research Excellence Framework.

Support for the institutional response to the Knowledge Exchange Framework and KE Concordat.


Oversight of institutional Knowledge Exchange data (HEBCI).


Administration of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.
