Data Returns

The Strategic Planning and Analytics Office is responsible for a number of important statutory statistical returns to government agencies, notably the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

The Office returns data throughout the year in line with externally set deadlines, with the largest statutory reports being the HESA Student record, normally constructed in the period through August to October and reporting on student activity in the previous reporting year up to 31 July , and the Higher Education Student Early Statistics (HESES) return to the HEFCE, with a census date of 1 December in any given year and reporting on student numbers in the current academic year near its commencement. Other student data returns that the Office manages are the HESA Aggregate Offshore return, the HESA Initial Teacher Training (ITT) return, the Key Information Set (KIS) return, and the Medical and Dental Survey (MDS) to the HEFCE. The Office also prepares and submits the HESA Staff data return on an annual basis.

As part of its work on statutory reporting, the Office also provides advice and guidance on issues related to student data and its quality, ensuring that the University is always in a position to meet its external reporting obligations whilst maximising operational efficiency.
