SEND £80 million funding boost announced

Children’s Minister Edward Timpson this week announced the first tranche of funding to support implementation of the SEND reforms in 2016-17.

Certificate in Education and Training recruiting now

The Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Warwick is running this qualification starting in October 2015. The qualification develops practical teaching skills and can prepare teachers to work in a wide range of contexts. You need to be teaching or have a teaching placement to undertake this qualification as there is a requirement for a minimum of 30 hours of practice. This certificate has replaced the CTLLS qualification.

The Certificate in Education and Training requires that participants have a subject specific qualification at level 3, English at level 2 and maths at Level 1, a cleared DBS check and a subject specialist mentor. They must also be in a teaching placement or a teaching role that provides at least 30 hours of practice.

The course is taught through six face-to-face days supported by a minimum of 30 hours of online study, three assignments and three observations.

The taught days are: 13 October, 10 November , 15 December 2015, 26 January, 23 February and 15 March 2016. Completion April 2016. Interviews are in July 2015.

HEI partner offering teaching courses

The University of Worcester has places abailable for new courses starting in September for people wanting to train to teach in the lifelong learning sector.

The courses are: Diploma in Education and Training (Level 5) 2 years part-time study including a minimum of 100 hours teaching practice. Course times: Tuesdays  5:00 to 8:00 pm, course fee £2,250

Diploma in Teaching English (Literacy and ESOL) 1 year part-time study including a minimum of 70 hours teaching practice. Course times: Block teaching dates ( October, January , March and June; 11 days in total), course fee £2 250

Teaching HE in FE course open for enrolment

The Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Warwick is running a course aimed at people who teach higher education courses in a further education setting.

The overall aim of this programme is to enable participants to critically examine their role as teachers HE in FE. At the end of the programme participants will have explored and reflected on their own role in teaching HE courses, have an enhanced understanding of teaching HE courses in the FE sector, have made connections between theory and practice and developed professional agency to enhance practice.

On successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a Post Graduate Award in Teaching College Based FE and will also be conferred the status of Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).

Teaching in Lifelong Learning, 2014

The latest edition of the cross-CETT journal Teaching in Lifelong Learning, a journal to inform and improve practice, Volume 6, Issue 1, is now available to be read here.

It is compiled by HUDCETT at the University of Huddersfield, and contains an introduction by HUDCETT director Dr Denise Robinson on Teaching Standards, FELTAG and the IfL, plus four papers on subjects including self assessment in learning, ethnicity and patterns of achievement in ITT, voices from the chalkface, and action research on the effects of interpretation on learning and teaching.

Practitioner-led action research programme invitation and report

Our colleagues at emCETT, the East Midlands Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training, are delivering a strand of the Education and Training Foundation's Practitioner-Led Research Support programme, with SUNETT delivering the other one.

emCETT have also put together a website summarising the previous programme and showcasing the research undertaken. You can find out more about both emCETT and SUNCETTs opportunities here, and there is also information about how to apply for this year's schemezs. Applications have to be in by October 3.

Certificate in Education and Training course runs this autumn

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training programme of study will be run at the University of Warwick's Centre for Lifelong Learning on September 30, November 4, December 2, January 13, February 10 and March 17, all days from 9.30am-4.30pm.

This is a blended learning programme, which is predominantly aimed at the wider lifelong learning sector; training providers, ACL and the voluntary service.

In addition to the taught days there are on-line tasks and a portfolio, which participants are required to complete in their own time, plus three teaching observations. There is more information, including more detail on entry requirements, here. Interviews will be held on September 9-10 at the University of Warwick.

Information on Level 5 specialist teacher training qualifications

The Initial Teacher Training department in the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Warwick is to run three Level 5 specialist teacher training qualfications - for English and maths teachers, and for those teaching disabled learners in the FE and skills sector.

They are suitable for people working in FE colleges, adult education, work-based training, the third sector and prisons. For more information entry requirements, fees and who to contact for more information read here.

Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice Update

The Department for Education has informed us that the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice, Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations and the government's response to consultation on those docuemtns have been placed on the Department's web pages at

The Code was laid before Parliament in June and must be approved to come into force. The Department is running a technical consultation on transitional arrangements that will support the phased implementation of the special educational needs and disability reforms from September 2014.
