IfL and CPD for the future conference

The Institute for Learning (IfL) worked in partnership with WMCETT to hold a one-day event to support practitioners across the West Midlands region. The event was provided free to IfL members.

The event, in November 2011 at the University of Warwick’s Scarman House conference centre, was attended by more than 50 people who work in training in a range of areas. These included FE, work-based learning, the prison service, the police, military, youth services, health services, charities and adult and community learning.

Sue Colquhoun, Head of Professional Status at the IfL, gave an introductory speech on Professionalism in Challenging Times, and took questions from the delegates.

Everyone then had the opportunity to take part in three out of four workshops. Anne Schofield, IfL West Midlands Regional Adviser (until 2012) ran one on gaining A/QTLS, and Sara Hattersley from the University of Warwick’s Essential Skills Resource Centre ran one on collaborative e-learning.

Carl Emery, a writer and lecturer specialising in emotional development and wellbeing, based at Manchester University, and Paul Daly, ran a workshop on dealing with behavioural challenges in the classroom, and Allen Crawford-Thomas and Christa Appleton, from JISC Advance Regional Support Centre West Midlands, took along some electronic gadgetry for a workshop on using digital technologies in the classroom as part of your CPD.

Feedback included comments such as

All very useful and acted as a good taster to further learning and practice.

I found the day enjoyable and informative.

It was excellent and I learnt loads: lots of useful information.

All exceptionally well prepared, well run and well delivered. WELL DONE
