Classics and Ancient History

Why study Classics at Warwick?

  • Our flexible degree programmes offer a wide choice of modules across the full range of Greek and Roman culture. We will encourage you to take a broad view of the classical world. In addition to studying Greek and/or Latin, you will be able to explore connections between the classical world and the civilisations of Europe and those of the Middle East through literature, history, archaeology and material culture.
  • We’re a small and friendly department, with around 80 undergraduate students each year. Our excellent staff-to-student ratio means that you’ll have the opportunity to develop strong relationships with our academic staff through regular one-to-one contact. In the National Student Survey 2016 we achieved a 90% overall satisfaction rating, and ranked top of the sector in the Academic Support and Personal Development categories. We pride ourselves on our innovative and flexible teaching, which uses cutting-edge technologies and techniques. Recent initiatives have included: workshops in mosaic-design and sculpting, digital storytelling and video conferences with students at Monash University in Australia. We also offer hands-on learning with regular trips to museums and classical sites.
  • You will be taught by an international team of experts who are leaders in their fields. We are ranked sixth across all major UK national league tables for the subject, including The Guardian 2017 league table, The Complete University Guide 2017 and The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016.
