What will I learn?

Our accredited Engineering degrees develop an in-depth understanding of the principles of engineering, with teaching from a wide range of automotive, civil, electronic, systems, manufacturing and mechanical engineering experts, and options to specialise in areas that interest you during your second year. These courses are led jointly by academics in the School of Engineering and WMG (Warwick Manufacturing Group). Interdisciplinary projects enable you to tackle challenges that could range from engineering a robot to rescue victims in a collapsed building, to designing and building a nano-satellite. You will develop sought-after skills including a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving, the ability to manage projects and communicate ideas, and the capacity to lead, research, design, innovate and develop products and systems.

In your first two years you will study material from across areas of Engineering, such as maths, computing, thermodynamics, materials, structures, electronics and business management, with opportunities to experience laboratory and design work in all our disciplines. You can also choose to study a foreign language. In order to give you multidisciplinary knowledge, in your third (and fourth) year(s) you will study a range of in-depth modules and undertake individual and group project work. Projects have included producing a design and prototype of a surgical tool for middle ear surgery and creating a knowledge capture system for the IMechE Formula Student racing car project.

In your final year you can also choose from a variety of optional modules to acquire a specialism.

How will I learn?

You will participate in lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical laboratory sessions. To help you make the transition from school to university, in your first year you will meet your personal tutor each week in a group usually of five or six students to address academic issues arising from lectures. Your tutor is there to support you throughout your university life and will especially help you to reflect upon your continuing development. Engineers are always involved in interdisciplinary group work and this forms part of our courses from year one.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through examinations and coursework. Coursework assessment can include laboratory reports, projects, essays and oral presentations.

What opportunities are there for work experience and study abroad?

You can gain industrial experience during your course via visits and project work. The School encourages students to undertake some form of industrial experience. Many students undertake internships and other work experience over the summer. Some students can take a year-long placement in industry or in a research environment.

  • Entry Requirements

    A level A*AA, to include Mathematics and Physics.

  • A levels in applied subjects and mixed portfolios Candidates are considered on an individual basis. Grades will be similar to those for candidates taking academic A and AS qualifications.

  • Applicants with a strong profile but without A Level Physics may be considered. Please contact ugadmissions@warwick.ac.uk prior to applying.
  • International Baccalaureate 38 points to include 6,6,6 including Mathematics and Physics. At least two of those subjects should be at Higher level.

    These normally exclude General Studies and Critical Thinking.

    Contextual data and differential offers Warwick may make differential offers to students in a number of circumstances. These include students participating in the Realising Opportunities programme, or who meet two of the contextual data criteria. Differential offers will be one or two grades below Warwick’s standard offer (to a minimum of BBB).

  • Access Courses Access to HE Diploma (QAA-recognised) and in appropriate subjects considered, if offered with A level Mathematics at grade A for MEng or grade B for BEng/BSc. Distinctions are required in Access and BTEC qualifications.

  • Warwick International Foundation Programme (IFP) All students who successfully complete the Warwick IFP and apply to Warwick through UCAS will receive a guaranteed conditional offer for a related undergraduate programme (selected courses only).     Interviews We do not typically interview applicants. Offers are made based on your UCAS form which includes predicted and actual grades, your personal statement and school reference. We are considering innovative ways to broaden how we assess candidates, so you are advised to check our website prior to applying in case we have introduced any changes.

What modules could I study?

Initially, all students follow the same programme covering topics which we believe are important for all engineers to understand. By the second term of Year Two you are able to continue on a general Engineering route or switch to one of the other courses (such as: Automotive, Biomedical Systems, Civil, Electronic, Electrical and Electronic, Engineering Business Management, Mechanical, Manufacturing and Mechanical, or, Systems).

There are nine core modules in the first year which are currently:

  • Dynamics and Thermodynamics
  • Electrical and Electronic Circuits
  • Engineering Design
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Introduction to Engineering Business Management
  • Introduction to Engineering: Professionalism and Practice
  • Materials for Engineering
  • Statics and Structures
  • Systems Modelling, Simulation and Computing

You are also free to take A Modern Foreign Language module as an optional extra.

In the second year there are four core modules that all students take:

  • Dynamics and Fluid Mechanics
  • Electromechanical System Design
  • Engineering Mathematics and Technical Computing
  • Technical Operations Management

You will then take the second-year core and optional modules for one of these engineering streams:

  • Automotive
  • Biomedical Systems
  • Civil
  • Electrical and Electronic
  • Electronic
  • Engineering Business Management
  • Manufacturing and Mechanical
  • Mechanical
  • Systems

In the third year you can take a mixture of core and optional modules form one of the streams listed above (except Engineering Business Management) working within timetable constraints.

In the final year you will take part in a group project and are free to take a mixture of fourth-year modules, again working within timetable constraints, from any of these engineering streams:

  • Automotive
  • Biomedical Systems
  • Civil
  • Electrical and Electronic
  • Electronic
  • Manufacturing and Mechanical
  • Mechanical
  • Systems

Engineering is an actively developing subject and so modules listed represent those available to current students. As the subject of Engineering and our school continuously evolve, the range of modules available and the content of individual modules may change in future years. Applicants will be informed as soon as the changes are approved. Current students will be consulted prior to the changes been approved.
