The School for Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Warwick warmly invites expressions of interest in its MPhil/PhD programmes in French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic Studies, Italian, and Translation and Transcultural Studies (including a theoretical/academic and a practice-based route).

The UK Government has announced today (4 August 2021) that the University of Warwick will be awarded £2.6 million for international student mobility, as part of the inaugural Turing Scheme.

Warwick is one of the world’s top 100 universities, and one of the ways it has achieved that position is because it is a globally connected institution. Its staff and students learn, work, and research as part of a highly international community, and more than 1000 Warwick students each year also take the opportunity to study and work abroad at one of the University’s many worldwide partner institutions.

• Chancellor's International Scholarships: the scheme is aimed at students from outside the UK and includes Overseas applicants, including students from the EU.
• China Scholarship Council / University of Warwick Scholarships: this scheme will fund 25 students across various subjects for up to 4 years, with the University covering the full cost of tuition fees and CSC providing a maintenance stipend and return international airfare between the UK and China. Note that Foreign Languages and Literature is among the priority areas listed.
• Monash Warwick Alliance Scholarships (Warwick): this scheme is open to all students applying to Warwick for the Alliance Joint PhD. For 2021/22 entry there will be up to 3 scholarships available across the university.

The deadlines for these schemes are all on Thursday 21st January 2021, 23.59 GMT. Note that all supporting evidence (including transcripts and references) must be uploaded by the same time.

We are also pleased to announce that, in addition to these university-funded awards, we shall make up to 4 further awards of Doctoral Fellowships to outstanding home/EU applicants: up to 2 for commencement of study on 1 July 2018 and up to 2 for entry in October 2018.

The University of Warwick’s Institute for Advanced Study has today opened its call for applications under the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions COFUND scheme (deadline: 30th November 2017). The fellowships offer successful applicants two years at Warwick, starting in September 2018. These fellowships are intended to be strongly linked to Warwick’s Global Research Priorities. As such, Warwick's School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) strongly encourages applications tied especially to the ‘Connecting Cultures’ priority.

The winners of the competition are each given a research budget of £400 and a conference budget of £600, and are invited to organise a one-day interdisciplinary conference during the following academic year.

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures is pleased to offer three bursaries to suitably qualified MA applicants for the 2016-17 academic year. These bursaries cover fees only, at the home/EU rate. Any home/EU applicant for any of the Masters courses offered in the School is eligible to apply for one of these bursaries.

The Department of French Studies at the University of Warwick currently has a thriving postgraduate research community with 18 PhD students, and welcomes applications for the following fully-funded PhD studentships (academic fees at home/Euro rates + maintenance or academic fees at overseas rates + maintenance) commencing October 2014.

* 3 prestigious Wolfson Foundation Scholarships in the Humanities recently awarded to the University in the areas of History, Literature and Languages. The first 2 Warwick Wolfson Languages Scholarships in 2012 and 2013 have gone to students from French Studies. The Wolfson scholarships include £6000 a year to spend on research travel, books, etc.

* 25 University-wide Chancellor's scholarship studentships for entry October 2014. Funding is for 3 1/2 years and covers academic fees at either home or EU rates + maintenance.

* 25 University-wide International Chancellor's scholarship studentships for entry October 2014. Funding covers academic fees at oveseas rates + maintenance.

The Department of French Studies at the University of Warwick will give vigorous support to outstanding early-career applications to this year's British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme.

We encourage eligible candidates working in appropriate subject areas to select Warwick as the host institution, and to benefit from the support and guidance of both Department and Faculty expertise when preparing the application. Eligibility criteria are as follows:

1.Applicants must be supported by the UK host institution in which they wish to hold the Fellowship

2.Applicants must be within three years of the award of a doctorate (for the 2013-2014 competition this means either already having been awarded a doctoral degree following a viva voce examination held on or after 1 April 2011; or having a reasonable expectation that they will have submitted and had their thesis examined by 1 April 2014)

3.Applicants in the 2013-2014 competition awarded a PhD following a viva voce examination held prior to 1 April 2011 who are unable to offer extenuating circumstances, such as interruption to their academic career for maternity leave or illness, will not be considered

4.Applicants must be a UK or EEA national, or have completed a doctorate at a UK university. Any applicant who does not fall into one of these categories must demonstrate a strong prior association with the UK academic community, for example through already having been employed in a temporary capacity (longer than six months) at a UK university.
