Introduction to Physiological Modelling
This module will introduce students to human anatomy and physiology; and will show them how to build computational models of these processes. The module will only focus on one or two physiological systems (i.e. nervous; circulatory; respiratory etc.), such that the form and function can be effectively covered with models developed at different levels of abstraction for different purposes in digital healthcare.
The module covers
- The function and structure of the nervous system.
- Single compartment models and the electrical properties of single neurons – Nernst and Goldman equations; integrate and fire models; Hodgkin-Huxley model.
- Multi-compartment models – cable equation; Rall model.
- Network models – feed-forward and recurrent networks.
- Sense of hearing – Mechanical transmission of sound through the outer-middle-inner ear; mechano-chemical-electrical model of auditory hair cells; models of perception.
- Rehabilitation technology/techniques based on physiological modelling, i.e. hearing aids; Cochlear and auditory brainstem implants; retinal implants.
