Biography

Paul Jennings is a physicist who has been with WMG for over 25 years working on research with industrial and academic partners. He has built groups in Intelligent Vehicles, Energy Storage and Management, and Experiential Engineering through significant research and capital funding. He currently leads a team of 6 academics, over 25 researchers and engineers, and over 40 doctoral students. He has published over 100 academic papers and has been Principal Investigator on over 30 research grants, from sources including EPSRC, Innovate UK and the EU.

Paul and his team deliver research which has a tangible impact on industrial partners' competitiveness. One of his early successes was in the area of automotive sound quality, in collaboration with Jaguar Cars (now JLR). The research resulted in a fundamental change in the way JLR benchmark their cars against competitors, and the way in which they engineer sound quality. Out of this work, Paul developed an 'Experiential Engineering' capability within WMG, a research group which improves decision-making throughout the development of new products and environments by applying the most effective and efficient understanding and analysis of end-user experiences. Research outputs have been successfully applied across many sectors and applications, including healthcare.

Paul has set up and led research activity in Energy, covering topics such as energy storage modelling and simulation, battery testing and characterisation, and energy management. From 2004 to 2009 Paul was Principal Investigator for the Hybrid Vehicle Premium Automotive Research and Development projects (>£3m), and in 2010 Paul was the lead academic for WMG's Vehicle Energy Facility (£2.7m). Following the industrial impact of these projects, WMG was successful in attracting funding from Government as part of the WMG centre High Value Manufacturing Catapult that started in 2012, and included a significant investment in battery characterisation facilities at WMG (£13m). Paul leads a flagship programme of research within the HVM Catapult with JLR and TMETC, involving permanent co-location of academic and industrial staff. He has also successfully led the diversification of HVM Catapult's energy capability into other sectors outside Automotive, including Rail, Marine and Grid.

Since 2014 Paul has led WMG's multidisciplinary Intelligent Vehicles research activity, which draws in capability from across the department including Complex Electrical Systems, Communications, Experiential Engineering, Cyber Security, Modelling and Simulation, Visualisation and Business and Operations. Paul is the lead academic for the '3xD Simulator for Intelligent Vehicles', a £3.2m facility funded by EPSRC which is the world's first immersive, simulated environment for smart and connected vehicles which includes emulation of wireless communications and the ability to drive in any vehicle. Current related research projects which Paul leads for WMG include INTACT, UKCITE, RACeD and VVIL.
