Funding success: Responsible Lending (FinCris follow-on)

Tom Sorell has been awarded follow-on funding for Impact and Engagement from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) as Co-Investigator on a 'Responsible Lending' project that responds to findings from the 2012-2016 AHRC project, FinCris. 'Responsible Lending' will focus on access to affordable credit for low and moderate income communities. It will engage with UK Credit Unions and trade associations to develop innovative and creative strategies for implementing responsible lending practices and products. The project will begin in 2017, and will be led by Professor Karen Rowlingson, University of Birmingham.

How to Act Responsibly

James Dempsey and Tom Sorell ask 'How to act responsibly' in The European Financial Review.

The case of Tom Hayes, recently imprisoned for 14 years for manipulating the Libor interest rate, illustrates well some of the ways in which financial sector employees can be drawn into irresponsible behaviour. De facto organisational values - those that are lived by employees on a day to day basis - exert a strong influence on behaviour. It is important for individuals to look beyond such organisational culture when deciding how to act. It is also important to avoid acting in ways that reinforce organisational values that may lead to others to engage in wrong doing.

Panel members at SBE annual meeting

Dr James Dempsey and Prof Tom Sorell spoke recently at the Society for Business Ethics Annual Meeting in Vancouver, which ran 6th - 8th August. They were part of a panel session entitled 'Responsibility and the Financial Crisis'.

The aim of the session was to make theoretical sense of ascriptions of responsibility for the crisis, and either argue why popular ascriptions are justified, or show that they are mistaken.

The panel also included Jeff Moriarty (Bentley) and David Silver (UBC), and was chaired by Michael McDonald (UBC). All the contributions were drawn from a forthcoming volume on the subject, edited by James and Tom.
