Research at the School of Engineering

The School of Engineering encompasses a wide range of top-quality research activities, covering all major disciplines in the field. As a fully integrated department, we are able to promote and pursue cross collaborative research on a wide-scale, and much of the work fits within key themes.

    Current Strategic Themes

    • Biomedical

    • Energy

    Research Groups

The School contains a number of research groups, which are made up of smaller defined labs:

    • Civil, Structural, Environmental & Sustainable Development: civil engineering structures and materials, water engineering, geotechnics, and development technology.

    • Electronics, Power and Microsystems: semiconductor devices, advanced power management systems, ultrasonic sensor techniques and electrical machines.

    • Fluid Dynamics: computational methods, flow control, cavitation, medical engineering, flow diagnostics.

    • Information & Communication Technologies: optical communications, wireless communications, coding and modulation, intelligent systems, image processing.

    • Sustainable Energy Engineering and Design: heat pumps and heating/cooling technology, energy storage and phase change materials, lightweight building structures and solar energy.

    • Systems, Measurement and Modelling: measurement, modelling and analysis of: biomedical and biological systems; precision engineering and surfaces; sustainable chemical processes & materials; and stochastic and complex systems.
