Programme

CPT2005 was created to bring together experimentalists and theoreticians working in cell biology to discuss the following questions:

  • What do we know about cellular regulation mechanisms of protein translocation?
  • What kind of mathematical tools are needed to describe protein distributions inside cells?
  • What can be expected from a 'quantitative microscopy'?
  • What is the benefit of combining theories of protein transport & reaction with quantitative experiments?

This specialised conference focussed on the discussion of new trends in cellular protein translocation research, with emphasis on the relationship between current experimental techniques and theoretical approaches.

Areas included:

  • The biology of protein transport across membranes
  • Protein transport and the cell nucleus

There were three themes:

Theme I: Current Trends in Protein Translocation (experimental techniques, quantification)

Theme II: Microscopy & Imaging (quantitative microscopy, image analysis)

Theme III: Theoretical Analysis (reaction schemes, transport mechanisms, numerical approaches)

SEB Plant Frontier Meeting

University of Sheffield, Monday 21st - Wednesday 23rd March 2005

Organised by the Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) in association with the Genomic Arabidopsis Resource Network (GARNet) and IPCR.

Researchers from around the world met at the University of Sheffield to discuss "the very Frontier of Plant Biology" (SEB).

The abstracts from the symposium can be viewed here.

Space and Time in Cells

University of Warwick, Monday 24th - Wednesday 26th May 2004

Organiser: Nigel Burroughs
Programme

Regulation of cell function has become increasingly complex with the emergence of flouresence studies demonstrating extensive active protein movement and protein localisation within cells. This can be transient, for example under cell signalling, or intrinsic to a cellular process where cell compartmentalisation is used to segregate proteins. This was a multidisciplinary meeting with theory (modelling), computation and experiment represented. Topics included cytoskeleton dynamics (eg motility), spatial-temporal compartmentalisation in signalling (eg the immunological synapse), and transport and protein targetting (golgi/ER).

Speakers included:

  • Marie-France Carlier (CNRS),
  • Micah Dembo (Boston),
  • Mike Dustin (NY),
  • Thomas Harder (Oxford),
  • Chris Hawes (Oxford),
  • Anne Kenworthy (Vanderbilt),
  • Avi Kupfer (NJC),
  • Mark Landree (John Hopkins),
  • Alex Mogilner (Davis),
  • David Stephens (Bristol),
  • David A. Weitz (Harvard),
  • Michael White (Liverpool),
  • Christoph Wuelfing (Texas)
