The MSc International Trade, Strategy and Operations (ITSO) course, at WMG, University of Warwick, is collaborating with a series of key industrial partners to offer students the opportunity to work on Company Collaboration Projects (CCP) again this academic year.

Company Collaboration Projects are collaborative dissertations that give students the opportunity to work on real-life challenges facing industry. The projects provides another option for students when selecting their dissertation, and in turn help to develop key skills and employment capabilities, whilst helping organisations to resolve their challenges via systematic research.

The CCP dissertation option was presented to students, at a special launch event for 23/24, by WMG’s ITSO Course Director, Dr Di Li. At the event, WMG’s Associate Dean (Postgraduate Education), Professor Dan Nunan highlighted the values of knowledge study and the practical impacts.

The students also heard from senior executives at industrial partners, including Dr Filomeno Martina, CEO and co-founder at WAAM3D, and Ms Shu Jia, Assistant CEO at Rexville Solutions, who shared more details about the projects available this year.

Ms Shu Jia explains: “The Company Collaboration Projects have brought great impacts to our business by helping us save costs of several millions. We are so happy to continue the collaborations on this with the ITSO programme at WMG.”

Dr Filomeno Martina comments: “WAAM3D is delighted to work together with WMG on the Company Collaboration Projects, which are a key aspect of our academic engagement. WMG’s projects are well organised and deliver highly valuable outputs. We feel honoured to support the WMG students with both their academic studies and professional development.”

ITSO student course representative, Rong Fu, says: “This event not only helps ITSO students to have a clearer understanding of the type of projects available, but also provides the opportunity to communicate with corporate staff and supervisors face-to-face. The CCP allow us the opportunity to apply what we have learnt in solving real-world problems which is extremely attractive and helpful for our future career development.”

Congratulations are in order for the accomplished individuals of WMG who marked a significant milestone at the University of Warwick's Winter Graduation Ceremonies this week.

A total of 1,381 Master's, Postgraduate Research and Undergraduate students graduated from across WMG.

There were 1,225 Master’s students; 1,072 were full-time, 35 part-time, and 118 studied overseas.

Twelve graduated from the Postgraduate research programme including 11 PhD students and one Master’s of Science by research student.

A total of 144 were undergraduate students; three graduated with a BSc in Cyber Security, one with a BSc in Digital Healthcare Science; two with a BEng in Automotive Engineering and the remaining 138 were Degree Apprenticeship students.

At the WMG graduation event, the alumni speeches delivered by esteemed speakers, Philomena Lavery (MSc Cyber Security and Management, 2020), and Dr. Benjamin Wood, (MEng Mechanical Engineering, 2006; EngD Engineering, 2012) were nothing short of inspiring. Their words not only resonated with wisdom but also ignited a sense of motivation and empowerment among the graduates.

Philomena Lavery, Senior Vice President Digital Security at AVEVA, and Dr. Benjamin Wood, Director, Research & Technology – Manufacturing Innovation at Hexcel Corporation, brought a unique blend of expertise and experience to the podium. Their heartfelt messages added an extra layer of significance to the celebration, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

Professor Robin Clark, Dean of WMG, said, “Congratulations to all our graduates. Your dedication and remarkable achievements have not only sculpted your academic journey but have also enriched the vibrant and innovative community here at WMG.

“I take immense pride in your accomplishments, and they stand as a testament to your resilience and commitment to excellence. I hope you continue to reach for new heights and inspire those around you now and in the future. Well done!”

WMG at the University of Warwick was pleased to host its annual Scholarship Dinner celebration for full-time Master’s students last week.

This academic year, WMG has welcomed a total of 225 scholarship students from across 45 different countries. The event was a chance to celebrate the achievements of the students and give them an opportunity to network with staff and peers.

The WMG Excellence Scholarship - a competitive, merit-based scholarship through which WMG provides tuition fee discounts to particularly strong applicants - was awarded to 130 of the students.

A further 23 students received a Chevening Scholarship funded by the UK Government Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Chevening Scholarships are widely considered one of the top scholarships for Master’s degrees, making them extremely prestigious and highly competitive.

The remaining 72 students received scholarships from partner sponsors from UK and international funding bodies including governments, charities, development funds, industry, and banks.

Professor Dan Nunan, Director of Full Time Postgraduate Programmes, who hosted the celebration event explained: “The annual scholarship dinner for MSc students was the biggest ever with nearly all of our 225 scholars attending.

“We are very grateful to the many external organisations who provide funding, sponsorship and other forms of financial support that enable students, who would not otherwise be able to study at Warwick, to attend. This year around £5m will be provided in scholarships and other support to students at WMG. Having this support is key in enabling WMG to continue to attract the best, and highest potential, students from all around the world.”

Cathy Fawcett, Student Recruitment and Marketing Manager at WMG, and organiser of this event commented: “It’s so gratifying bringing together all our scholars for a celebration like this. For so many, joining Warwick is the culmination of several years’ effort as the competition, particularly for awards like Chevening, is immense. A special thanks to the staff - course leaders, representatives and others who did a fantastic job of hosting tables and making this a really special occasion for our scholars.”

• As the first team to enter an all-electric racing car into Formula Student (in 2018), students from the University of Warwick are in to Africa to share expertise and drive electric vehicle (EV) technology across the continent
• They will help launch of Formula Student Africa – a new motorsport competition for students, using only electric vehicles (EVs)
• The diverse team is passionate about increasing representation in motorsport, especially in leadership positions

Students from the University of Warwick are working with fellow students in Africa in a capacity-building project to drive forward electrification in the motor industry.

Members of the Formula Student team are in South Africa this week to share their knowledge on building and racing electric vehicles. Their expertise will be critical to the launch of Formula Student Africa, an all-electric motorsport competition for students across the continent, based on the UK model.

Six South African universities are already onboard for the series, including the University of Cape Town, University of Johannesburg, University of South Africa, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Cape Peninsula University of Technology and University of the Witwatersrand.

It is hoped that Formula Student Africa will help drive the electrification of transport around Africa, propelled by technological advances in motorsport. In particular, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the University of Warwick’s WMG are keen to collaborate with their state-of-the-art research into EV batteries. The student teams design the batteries themselves as well as the shape and components of their racing car.

Warwick Racing’s team principal Prem Gill, second year Mechanical Engineering student, said: “I’m thrilled to lead such a group of highly motivated and dedicated engineering students who share a passion for motorsport and advanced technology.

“The visit to South Africa is a huge milestone and aligns with my own aspirations to drive positive change in the industry and make a meaningful impact in the world. It’s an opportunity to expand our knowledge, network with industry professionals, and showcase our innovative ideas.

“This venture serves as a crucial moment in the development of Formula Student Africa, as we aim to establish partnerships and network with key players in the industry. Our aspirations for this competition are to foster the next generation of engineers and help to drive sustainability in motorsport.”

Alongside their ground-breaking work on electric racing cars, Warwick’s Formula Student team is championing representation in the motorsport industry. Of the 120 team members, more than 40 are women. 40% of the senior positions in the team are also filled by women.

Warwick Racing’s Chief Suspension Engineer Marieta Kysela, a second year Systems Engineering student, added: “Our team is very diverse, consisting of people from all year groups and degrees, allowing for innovative ideas, solutions and meaningful learning. While there is beginning to be wider representation in the industry, I would like to inspire more women to be leaders in the motorsport sector.”

Professor Robin Clark, Dean of WMG, said: “Warwick’s involvement in Formula Student is well established. It is therefore exciting to see that energy now being directed in a different direction as Formula Student Africa looks to establish itself in the calendar. I am sure that Warwick Racing will share the experience and enthusiasm that is so much part of the team with peers in South Africa and that successful new opportunities will be realised.”

Formula Student is an IMechE competition that Warwick students have participated in for many years. The competition aims to develop young engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering. The format provides an ideal opportunity for students to demonstrate their engineering knowledge, and test and improve their capabilities to deliver a complex product in the demanding environment of a motorsport competition.

The ultimate aim is to design and race a sports car. This year’s comp takes place at Silverstone. The Warwick student project team uses the name Warwick Racing.

Congratulations to the incredible Class of 2022 as they celebrate their graduation.

This year a total of 321 Master’s, Postgraduate Research and Undergraduate students graduated from across WMG.

There were 269 Master’s students comprising 156 UK and 89 overseas full-time students, and a further 24 from the part-time Master’s programme.

From the Undergraduate courses, 30 graduated from BSc Cyber Security and two from Digital Healthcare Science.

There were a further 20 from the Postgraduate Research programme including six EngD, 13 PhD and one Master’s by Research.

Celebrations were extra special this year because, as well as celebrating the success of the Class of 2022, it was also an opportunity for graduates whose original ceremonies were postponed, due to Covid-19, to celebrate.

Professor Robin Clark, Dean of WMG, said: “It is always a pleasure to recognise the achievements of our students, and graduation is the culmination of all their hard work under the guidance of the teaching staff.

“It is especially important this year as all the students graduating have had parts of their education journey impacted by the pandemic. To deal with this and demonstrate the resilience and commitment to study is truly commendable. Very well done to everyone and congratulations on your award!”

Kanishka Arumugam, WMG MSc Engineering Business Management alumnus, has been recognised at the prestigious Global Pump Industry Awards.

Kanishka, who graduated in 2015, is Co-CEO of EKKI WATER TECHNOLOGIES in India. Kanishka and EKKI were recognised in two categories at the ceremony, in Kenilworth, organised by the British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA) along with leading European pump industry members.

The Pump Industry Awards (PIA) is not only one of the most prestigious, but also one of the oldest and most revered in the world. The Awards aim to recognise outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and skills. EKKI is the first Indian company to be recognised in two categories.

EKKI was recognised as a key contributor for skills and training in the industry through its EKKI International Water Technology Centres (EIWTC). EIWTC is a global centre of excellence for training, research and entrepreneurship in pumps and water related technologies, partnering with leading industries, government and academic institutions globally.

Kanishka was also acknowledged as a ‘Rising Star,’ for his significant contribution in transforming the fortunes of his family business, EKKI, from making agriculture pumps to cutting-edge water technologies around the world. He is credited for setting up India’s first waste water joint venture with German Pump major HOMA which has a presence in more than 120 countries across the world.

Kanishka Arumugam said: "We at EKKI are immensely proud to be recognised internationally for our innovative initiatives within the industry. This recognition from the world’s most respected and important members of the Pump Industry, recognises the true success and potential of EKKI.

“At EKKI, we are really passionate about producing globally competitive products from India and make EKKI as one of the most respected family-owned companies from this part of the world.

“WMG at the University of Warwick, taught me the importance of applied academia, and I was very fortunate to be mentored by Professor Sujit Banerji who taught us to make global quality. Professor Banerji has recently been appointed as a Chief Advisor to EKKI and continues to mentor us, which is of immense value to both me personally and the company.”

He added: “I dedicate this recognition to my father our Group Founder Mr.Arumugam.P, members of EKKI, our partner HOMA in Germany, distributors, dealers and supply chain partners across the globe.

“I would also like to thank my alma mater, Warwick University, for fostering in me the art of applied academia in industry.”

WMG held its annual student careers fair from 14th to 18th February 2022.

FutureFest, organised by the WMG Master’s Team gave students the chance to hear from prospective employers, explore career opportunities, attend skills workshops, and network with others.

Konstantina Dee, WMG’s Careers and Employability Officer, and organiser of the event, said: “We have held FutureFest annually for the last few years. Last year, due to the Covid restrictions, the event was held fully online. But this year, we were delighted to be able to offer a mix of both online and in-person sessions.

“There was a great atmosphere, and it was nice for students and employers to be able to meet face-to-face, as well as participating in online events. We would like to say a big thank you to all employers, students and staff who took part in sessions across the five days. We are pleased that FutureFest 2022 was another great success.”

A total of 14 companies attended the event including Rolls Royce, Faithful+Gould, Tata Consultancy Services, Alten UK, ABP Food Group UK and TPP.

More than 730 students joined over the course of the week describing it as ‘very valuable’, ‘insightful’, and a ‘great opportunity to speak to employers and find out about opportunities within their organisations.’

Kenta Shibuya from 4C Associates said: “FutureFest Careers Fair is a fantastic opportunity for exhibitors to connect with students seeking a masters’ degree from WMG. As an alumnus, it was a pleasure introducing opportunities at 4C Associates to the students.”

Mandy Thompson from ABP Food Group UK added: “After two long years of hosting virtual careers fairs it was lovely to get back onto campus and meet so many interesting students in person. Warwick didn’t disappoint in presenting us with engaged students who were more than equipped for a career in the food industry.”

A particular highlight of FutureFest was a session led by Adeel Azam from Faithful+Gould. Adeel is a former WMG Master’s student, who is now a Director at the integrated project and programme management consultancy. Adeel gave an account of his career so far, and shared advice with students one-to-one at the end of the session.

Daniel Dowling-Brown, Managing Surveyor at Faithful+Gould, said: “What an amazing two days spent with WMG at the University of Warwick. The students were very engaging, and it was a privilege to be able to speak to so many about our business and our industry. We look forward to seeing many of them again as colleagues in the future and look forward to being back again next year.”

WMG Associate Professor, and MSc Service Management and Design Course Director, Mairi Macintyre and her students presented ‘COVID 19 - Lessons for the Service Professional’ at the prestigious international INFORMS Conference on Service Science (ICSS2021).

The research was based on insights taken from a series of special online seminars, at the height of the pandemic, hosted by Mairi. The series line-up included experts from a mix of sectors including aerospace, engineering, entertainment, energy, finance, travel and education. Companies represented included Rolls Royce UK, Innovate UK, Hong Kong Disneyland, National Grid, and many more.

 The experts shared their insights and experiences of crisis management including their responses to the COVID19 pandemic, and predictions and challenges for the recovery period.

The students then analysed these insights to identify shifting priorities for the service professional, before presenting the findings at the Service Marketing stream at ICSS2021.

Mairi explained: “Congratulations to all researchers involved. To achieve publication at this prestigious conference is a real achievement. The students approached the tasks each week diligently, and with the commitment required to carry out first class research of publishable quality without the opportunity to ever meet in person. It is a fantastic accomplishment and one that we can all learn from.”

The students have also submitted their research to an international education conference taking place in Autumn 2021.

Congratulations to all of the brilliant WMG students on their graduation.

This year a total of 406 Master’s, Postgraduate Research and Undergraduate students graduated from across WMG.

There were 302 Master’s students made up of 279 UK and overseas full-time students, and a further 23, from the part-time Master’s programme.

From the Undergraduate courses, 17 graduated from Cyber Security and 74 from the Applied Engineering Programme (AEP).

There were a further 13 from the Postgraduate Research programme including three EngD, eight PhD, one McPhil and one Master’s by Research.

A virtual results celebration will be held today (21st July) with official graduation ceremony expected to take place in summer 2022.

Professor Robin Clark, Dean of WMG and Director of Education, said: “It has been another incredibly difficult year for our students, but they have all risen to the challenge very well and achieved some fantastic results.

“Congratulations to you all, celebrate safely, and I wish you all the very best in your future careers.”

Congratulations to all of the brilliant WMG students who graduated, virtually.

Unfortunately the University’s traditional summer degree ceremonies were regrettably postponed due to the COVID19 pandemic. So, all students graduated in absentia until we can meet again, and hold our celebratory graduation ceremonies.

The University is working hard to reschedule the ceremonies on alternative dates later on in the 2020/21 academic year, and graduates will be notified when these have been arranged.

Graduating in absentia

This summer a total of 261 students from the Full-time Master’s and Part-time Postgraduate Programmes, including Master’s, Degree Apprenticeships and custom programmes, graduated from across WMG.

This was made up of 206 UK and 55 overseas students.

A further 22 graduated from the Postgraduate Research programme including 14 PhD, 7 EngD and one Master’s by Research students.
