Kenilworth Mayor gives diabetes research in Warwickshire a boost

Councillor Michael Coker has chosen to make a donation of £2,500 to the University of Warwick’s Diabetes research groups from the Mayor’s charitable fundraising. The funds have been raised over the last year through numerous fundraising events and campaigns locally.

Over 750 biomarkers identified as potentials for early cancer screening test

Researchers have identified 788 biomarkers in blood that could be used to develop an early stage cancer screening test for the general population.

The team - from the Universities of Sheffield, Coventry and Warwick - started with over 19,000 scientific studies published over the last five years that investigated blood based biomarkers. Systematic review methods - including ruling out studies in fewer than 50 patients - reduced this to 4,000 studies from which the final biomarker list was compiled.

Warwick develops cloud-computing platform for UK's medical microbiology community

The University of Warwick has led the development of a cloud-based microbial bioinformatics resource, which is believed to be the largest of its kind in the world.

The Cloud Infrastructure for Microbial Bioinformatics (or CLIMB project) is a resource for the UK's medical microbiology community and international partners. It will support their research by providing free cloud-based computing, storage, and analysis tools.

Well done to the 60 runners who donned bright orange shirts for the annual Two Castles 10k, raising funds and awareness of cancer research and research into premature birth at Warwick. Members of #TeamWarwickUni came from across the University’s academic and administrative staff, as well as friends and family of staff members.

Meet Blake Quin Burton

It’s amazing to think that the smallest things can matter the most. That’s certainly the case for Kayleigh and Matt Burton, whose world was transformed by the household’s tiniest family member – baby Blake Quin Burton.

Blake’s arrival into his parents’ lives in Leeds was indebted to something even smaller – natural killer cells. The research into these cells, by Professor Siobhan Quenby’s team, helped give hope to the Burtons after they experienced four miscarriages in two years.
