£10 million fund to widen access to education at Warwick

Our transformational new social mobility programme - Warwick Scholars - aims to change the lives of hundreds of young people in the Midlands who have the potential to study at Warwick, one of the world’s top 100 ranked universities, but who may face social or economic barriers to entering Warwick.

The programme focuses on prospective students from disadvantaged backgrounds or groups under-represented in higher education within a 30 mile commute of Warwick’s main campus in Coventry and Warwickshire.

Warwick Scholars will provide participants with an opportunity to reach their full academic potential and prepare for the transition to Warwick, achieving the best possible A Level grades. This will be followed by enhanced support and opportunities when they become students at Warwick, facilitating positive outcomes during their university experience and beyond.

University of Warwick backs new initiative to get Coventry’s young learners IntoUniversity

The University of Warwick has teamed up with national educational charity IntoUniversity to launch a new project aimed at raising aspirations and improving educational outcomes for children and young people in Coventry.

The IntoUniversity Coventry centre, based in the Hillfields area of the city, will be run by national education charity IntoUniversity in partnership with the University.

Building on existing outreach programmes the centre will work with up to 1,000 children and young people each year, to help them make the best of their talents and improve their chances of gaining a university place.

The Coventry centre, based in the St Peter’s Centre on Charles Street, is already working with three primary schools, two secondary schools and a Sixth Form college in the area. Over one hundred students have signed up to receive after-school support, access to university-student mentors, workshops and insight into university life.

Nuneaton mother inspires family to return to education

A Nuneaton mother who returned to education and graduated from the University of Warwick this week has inspired her whole family to do the same.

Former bank manager, Susan Adcock, 53, has gained a 2:1 in Social Studies through Warwick’s Centre for Life Long Learning. Now her husband, daughter and son have all taken or enrolled on courses at the university too.

After seeing Sue’s achievements, her daughter Sam Jackson, 30, enrolled on the course and has just completed her first year of the same degree, and Sue’s son Scott, 23, will start this year. Husband Michael, 54, has successfully completed the Centre’s Gateway to Higher Education course, a free 18 week programme that allows adult learners to sample what it would be like to return to education without committing to a full degree.
