Three University of Warwick academics have been recognised in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

With thanks to the University of Warwick, BT and Warwickshire County Council, ten new businesses will be the first to benefit from a new Creative Futures Accelerator Programme in Leamington Spa’s Creative District that will help those businesses become part of the UK’s largest creative cluster outside Greater London.

The University of Warwick is geographically very close to the proposed location of a testing mega lab in Leamington Spa that was announced today (16 November). The University has been asked if we can help with this initiative and we have offered our full support. We believe that we can provide significant assistance that will be crucial to getting the mega lab up and running quickly and effectively.

Autonomous pods born in Coventry are now able to swarm together in a world first, thanks to research by WMG at the University of Warwick in partnership with Aurrigo and Milton Keynes council.

With the concept of driverless pods now more realistic than futuristic, the vehicles are one step closer to being put to use, as they can now help each other to drive and navigate through pedestrian areas around people.

'Science on the Hill' is a new programme of public engagement events jointly hosted by the University’s School of Life Sciences and the Wellcome-Warwick Quantiative Biomedicine Programme at Warwick Medical School. These interactive two hour events taking place across the academic year will feature 20 researchers giving a birds-eye view of the latest exciting developments in their discipline.

Five free public events that will showcase the cutting-edge research being performed at the Gibbet Hill campus into the building blocks of life, futures in medicine and the factors that define our health are scheduled up to July 2020.

The public science festival, Pint of Science, is returning to Coventry this year with experts from the Universities of Warwick and Coventry talking about their research work in a selection of pubs and venues around the city.

This year academics will be appearing at Backhaus and Co at Fargo Village, The Yard and Shopfront Theatre in the city centre and The Old Clarence in Earlsdon, between 20 and 22 May. There will also be a programme of talks at the White Horse, Leamington Spa.

Among the topics the presenters will be covering are Martians, DNA, electricity and magnetism, dyslexia, pollution, soil, cells, plastic and paramedics. They will also be tackling important issues like sexual health, the importance of sleep, and asking who’d win in a fight – the sun or a trillion lions?

To celebrate a new partnership with The Sunday Times/Peters Fraser + Dunlop Young Writer of the Year Award, the University of Warwick has launched the freeflow Festival.

Taking place on Wednesday 29th November 2017, the freeflow Festival is a day packed full of events across campus featuring some of the best names in the literary world including Owen Sheers, Sarah Moss, Natalie Haynes, and Jess Green. In addition, fresh from the Glastonbury stage and a five star run at the Edinburgh Fringe, the poets, rappers, musicians and storytellers - Tongue Fu – will perform at The Assembly in Leamington Spa.

Students new to living in Leamington have been welcomed to the town by various organisations and the town’s Member of Parliament at a community event in Old Town.

The event - the first of its kind in the town - was organised by Warwick Students’ Union and held at the Brunswick Hub in Shrubland Street with the aim of helping the students to settle in to their new surroundings and to find out more about the various health and wellbeing services available to them.

Students from the University of Warwick were among the volunteers working with the Inland Waterways Association and the Canal and River Trust to clear a stretch of the Grand UnionCanal in Leamington Spa at the weekend.

In addition to tyres, fishing line and plastic bags, the team pulled three motorbikes, 28 bicycles and 40 shopping trolleys from the watery depths, as well as several pushchairs, a pram, a complete ‘Pay and Display’ sign on a pole and the street sign for Llewellyn Road.

The continued success and growth of WMG at the University of Warwick means that we are now looking almost 200 new recruits to join our team. The search is on to find engineers, researchers, project managers, data analysts, software developers, and technicians.

To help with our search we’ll be holding a recruitment open day at our International Digital Laboratory at the University of Warwick on Saturday 16 September 2017.

On the day attendees will have the chance to tour our world-class research facilities, and staff from our various research areas will be on hand to explain what it’s really like working at WMG. There will also be the chance to join a tour of our state-of-the-art research facilities to check out the sort of projects you could work on.

On Friday 9 June, we partnered with Warwickshire County Council to welcome Stage Three of the 2017 Women’s Cycle Tour to our region and on to our campus.

Shooting the Past is a new, collaborative project between UniTracks, and the Departments of History and Film & TV at the University of Warwick. The project was one of two options available to the Year 10 UniTracks groups during the spring term (the other being the Big Deal with Warwick Business School).

Campion School, Leamington Spa and Harris Church of England School, Rugby were among the schools who chose to take part.

Warwickshire County Council announced that, in partnership with the University of Warwick, the county will be hosting Stage Three of the forthcoming Women's Tour on Friday 9 June.

The launch, held at the world class campus of the University of Warwick where the Tour will pass through, was attended by many of the region's top sportswomen including Kenilworth's World and European Champion rider Ciara Horne of the Cervelo Bigla team.

The University of Warwick has announced it will continue to fund the Leamington Street Marshals for a further five years. The scheme helps both safeguard students after a night out and promotes positive community relations by encouraging students to behave responsibly whilst walking through residential areas.

Started in 2013 the scheme is a partnership between the University of Warwick, the Students' Union, Warwick District Council, Warwickshire Police and SafetyNet Security Group and is funded by the University. A similar scheme was launched in Canterbury in 2015 and other towns and cities across the UK are now considering using this model.

Our student volunteers joined volunteers from Tesco and local residents to take part in the autumn canal clean up in Leamington Spa on Sunday 23 October.

OPERA could help improve life for vulnerable people in Leamington. Free weekly classes are being launched for those over the age of 18 suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s and other mental health issues. Warwick University student and Leamington resident Nic Miller hopes the two hour workshops will help improve well-being and encourage some of the most vulnerable members of society to socialise.
