Three University of Warwick academics have been recognised in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

'Science on the Hill' is a new programme of public engagement events jointly hosted by the University’s School of Life Sciences and the Wellcome-Warwick Quantiative Biomedicine Programme at Warwick Medical School. These interactive two hour events taking place across the academic year will feature 20 researchers giving a birds-eye view of the latest exciting developments in their discipline.

Five free public events that will showcase the cutting-edge research being performed at the Gibbet Hill campus into the building blocks of life, futures in medicine and the factors that define our health are scheduled up to July 2020.

More than 500 people took part in the workshops, talks and activities organised by the University of Warwick for this year’s ESRC Festival of Social Science. University researchers took to Coventry and Warwickshire’s streets, bars and community centres to share insights from their work with enthusiastic and interested audiences. The events tackled topics from the nature of time itself and the puzzle of DNA to taxes and accents.

Dr Rachel Turner-King and a team of volunteers organised a pop-up Story Garden in Canley Community Centre, with four themed areas of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter representing different aspects of learning.

The public science festival, Pint of Science, is returning to Coventry this year with experts from the Universities of Warwick and Coventry talking about their research work in a selection of pubs and venues around the city.

This year academics will be appearing at Backhaus and Co at Fargo Village, The Yard and Shopfront Theatre in the city centre and The Old Clarence in Earlsdon, between 20 and 22 May. There will also be a programme of talks at the White Horse, Leamington Spa.

Among the topics the presenters will be covering are Martians, DNA, electricity and magnetism, dyslexia, pollution, soil, cells, plastic and paramedics. They will also be tackling important issues like sexual health, the importance of sleep, and asking who’d win in a fight – the sun or a trillion lions?

Warwickshire Women and the Fight for the Vote,

One hundred years ago thousands of people were on the march to get the vote for women. Although the focus of the women’s suffrage movement is often on London and on major figures such as Emmeline Pankhurst and Emily Wilding Davison, these talks by leading political historian, Professor Sarah Richardson of the University of Warwick's Department of History, will uncover the unsung and unknown activists from the largely rural county of Warwickshire.

A week-long pop-up exhibition celebrating Coventry’s local history via the television archive will be held at Theatre Absolute’s Shop Front Theatre, 38 City Arcade, Coventry, CV1 3HW between the 16th and 20th April 2018. Visitors will engage with various screens (including a pair of vintage living room sets) displaying programmes made in and about Coventry, many of which have not been seen since their original broadcast.

Highlights include the documentary Coventry Kids: People of a Restless City (BBC, 1960), Philip Donnellan’s lyrical documentary about a multi-cultural postwar Coventry, About Religion: The New Coventry Plays No. 1: ‘This is the End’ (ITV/ATV, 1962), the first of a series of modern religious plays written especially for the new Coventry Cathedral, and Arena: Rudies Come Back or The Rise and Rise of 2-Tone (BBC2, 1980) an investigation of the pop music genre at the heart of Coventry’s music scene in the 1980s, produced by Alan Yentob for BBC Bristol.

People from across the region are being invited to spend the evening in conversation with some the University of Warwick’s cancer research team next week (Tuesday 30 January).

The Cancer Research Centre Ideas Café aims to create a relaxed environment in which experts can tell members of the public about the latest research being carried out at Warwick. There will also be time for discussion about cancer, with the aim of listening to the views and ideas from the public and informing future research.

To celebrate a new partnership with The Sunday Times/Peters Fraser + Dunlop Young Writer of the Year Award, the University of Warwick has launched the freeflow Festival.

Taking place on Wednesday 29th November 2017, the freeflow Festival is a day packed full of events across campus featuring some of the best names in the literary world including Owen Sheers, Sarah Moss, Natalie Haynes, and Jess Green. In addition, fresh from the Glastonbury stage and a five star run at the Edinburgh Fringe, the poets, rappers, musicians and storytellers - Tongue Fu – will perform at The Assembly in Leamington Spa.

The Kenilworth Arts Festival will return this month bringing a host of award-winning musicians, best-selling authors and outstanding emerging talent to the town.

The new look festival, now in its second year, is the brainchild of Warwick post-graduate students Lewis Smith and Charlotte Thomas. It runs from 17 – 23 September with events taking place in a range of exciting and intimate venues around Kenilworth.

World-class opera performances will be broadcast live and free of charge for the University community and members of the public at the University of Warwick this summer. They will be beamed live from the Royal Opera House in London directly to the Big Screen on the main campus piazza on Tuesday 4 July (La traviata) and Friday 14 July (Turandot).

The first screening is La traviata on Tuesday 4 July, followed by Turandot, which includes the world-famous aria “Nessun Dorma” on Friday 14 July. The live broadcasts feature exclusive backstage footage and competitions, all adding to these special events in Warwick’s summer social calendar.

Members of the local community will have the chance to get their hands on the toys of the future and cutting-edge technology - at the University of Warwick’s Engineering Day this month.

The School of Engineering is opening its doors to the public, allowing YOU to try its mind-controlled Scalextric set, smell with an electronic nose that can sniff out diseases, and see a smoke-ring cannon in action!

Members of the public are to be given behind-the-scenes access to scientific laboratories at the University of Warwick, as well as the chance get to grips with cutting-edge research. Over the next year, the School of Life Sciences will be running open events, allowing people of all ages to come along and find out how the natural world works – from the human brain, to antibiotics and climate change.

The Coventry and Warwickshire Tourism and Culture awards are of real significance for our region, which boasts a phenomenal amount of world class assets for visitors to the area and locals alike to enjoy - and we've been shortlisted in six categories.

Working with Warwick District Council and Arts Connect, Warwick Arts Centre are helping school children, their parents and teachers build their own community arts festival in July 2017. The Arts Centre is arranging for children to see new artistic work and work with artists so that they can make their own new work for their festival, but they’ll also be programming professional work, and marketing and delivering the whole event. Schools, business and community groups can all get involved in the project too, and the idea is that this becomes an embedded community event that will continue once our involvement with the project is over.

The department of Statistics at the University of Warwick is holding its next public lecture at 6.15pm on Wednesday 10th February. They will be welcoming Professor Bernard Silverman FRS, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Home Office as he talks about Mathematics and Science in the Home Office.

Researchers from the Multicultural Shakespeare in Britain Project at the University of Warwick are set to launch a new online Shakespeare performance database on 15 Jan 2016 that holds three years of research which documents and contextualises BAME performers’ crucial yet undervalued contribution to our understanding of Shakespeare - our greatest cultural symbol of ‘Britishness’.

WMG at the University of Warwick is to play a significant role in a new £23 million interdisciplinary Research Hub designed to drive forward UK research in the Internet of Things (IoT). Ed Vaizey, Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy has confirmed that the University of Warwick is one of nine leading UK universities in the PETRAS consortium which will work together over the next three years to explore critical issues in privacy, ethics, trust, reliability, acceptability, and security.
